8am; at Martello's Tower:

"Two shafts of soft daylight fell across the flagged floor from the high barbicans: and at the meeting of their rays a cloud of coalsmoke and fumes of fried grease floated, turning."

and at 8 Eccles Street, simultaneously:

"he took off the kettle and crushed the pan flat on the live coals and watched the lump of butter slide and melt. He dropped the kidney amid the sizzling butter sauce. Pepper. He sprinkled it through his fingers, ringwise, from the chipped eggcup."

see? there's nothing new under the sun. Fire up that lump, eat, drink, and be merry, for "the years, threescore and ten, of allotted human life, form a parenthesis of infinitesimal brevity."

thanks for indulging
J (with apologies to JJ)
