Most that I know of who own a medium, bought it as a little sister to their large. A coworker of mine bought a medium a few months ago (first egg) then sold it and bought a large. In my opinion a large is the way to go. They represent the largest portion off eggs sold. Also, most all accessories are designed for the large.

Are you trying to decide between a medium and a large? If so, here are some things to consider. Your main consideration is cooking things that take up space on the grid. How many burgers or chicken parts might you want to try to grill at one time? Are you going to want to do pizza? If so, how big a pie will you want to cook? (I cook 14" pies on a 16" stone in the large.) Will you want to cook a large turkey for Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner for a crowd? Will you ever want to cook paella? If so, how large a pan/how many people will you want to use/serve? (You can use a 14" pan for 4 people in the large.) Will you have parties and want to cook for crowds or just for the immediate family? (I never would have anticipated it, but I once cooked a meal for a women's homeless shelter.)The Naked Whiz

The first egg I bought was a large and it's my favorite out of 4 different sizes. The reason I bought the large rather then the medium at the time is the difference in price was about $75 then and at the time it was not a big deal. (but gas was not $4 a gal) LOL
My vote would be a large if it's in the budget, if not any size egg is better then no egg. You will get many suggestions but it depends on your needs, amount you will be cooking for and such. There is only one of me but I still started with a large.
Best of luck,

tnw gives you alot of great points to think about. once you have one you may want another to complement it. i started out with an xl only because i couldn`t wait for the local
dealer who had the best prices to get larges back in stock. so i probably would have started out with a large but am very happy with the xl and have complemented it with
a small last fall that a local lady said she had no use for anymore (imagine that) and sold
it for fifty bucks. i use both every week and love both. i really wanted a medium as a
2nd but the small is plenty big for smaller cooks. good luck -
I have a medium. I can cook just about anything on it that others do, but I wish I had bought a large. The reason is because of the quantity of food per cook is limited. My rational was that "it's just the wife and I" so a medium should do fine...and it does, except for the amount of food for parties I wish I could cook. It's amazing how much more food will fit on a grid that's just a few inches larger in diameter. But, as has already been said...any egg is better than no egg. Good luck.

When we roll out a medium I tell customer's " You've got 30 days to bring this back and we'll put every penny towards a large".. This is one product you don't want to have buyer's remorse.

Great way to treat customers. Without giving numbers is there much of a difference $ between the med & lg???
When I got my lg there was only a $75 difference.
Hope I didn't put ya on the spot so if you can't answer I understand.
Cheers,

When I got my first medium, I was cooking regularly for 4, and have served 10 at once with it. Its a trifle small for large briskets, and if you want more than 2 slabs of ribs, they will need to go in a vertical rack. I eventually got a second medium to be able to cook at different temperatures, or to host larger numbers of guest. Served 14 a few weeks ago, with a few left-overs.

Unless you have a compelling reason to do otherwise, buy the large.

How often do they come back? What do you do with the mediums that get returned? -
I did not read your question to be whether to buy a large or a medium but, as you asked "Any one have thoughts on the amount of food able to be cooked on a Medium Egg?? I have a Medium and a Large and I use the Medium 85% of the time. I cook most of the time just for the wife and myself and certainly the Medium is just fine. We have company over and can cook for groups of six just fine. I can get a lot of meat on my medium if I use two grates and some planning. Hope this helps.

I had a really good reason for going with a Med rather than Large, as the photos show my storage space. That said, now that I've been cooking on my MBGE a few weeks, I'd order the same today. I'm usually cooking for the wife and I, occasionally for a few friends. From pics on this forum, I know you can get a lot of food on a Med - more than I ever plan to cook.

WOW!!!!
Sounds like a dealer I would like to have.

Simular questions get asked a lot here.
The common problem is that each of us have different needs/uses. In order to help you lets us know more of what you want and or how many you are cooking for.
For example, most of the time I cook for the wife an I. Once a month or maybe a little more often I will cook for 24 adults & children. 90% of the time the mini works great for me.
Broc on the forum has a medium and small and often cooks for up to 150 people, it takes some planning but we read about him cooking for groups of 30 up to 150.
Tell us more about you and also it would help to know why you are thinking of a medium.

I've been cooking on a Small for just over a month. I can get quite a bit of meat on it, but when I start adding veggies I quickly run out of room. Four chicken thighs and four sweet potato halves pretty much fill the grate.
We bought the small to get started Egging and to help us decide what size our "big" egg should be. Based on my experience with the Small we just ordered a Large to keep it company. Our local dealer has a Medium in the showroom and it just doesn't look enough larger than our Small. (We saw several XL's in action at the Waldorf Eggfest and decided they were much larger than we needed.) -
Dinah, I'm sure a medium will be okay for most cooks but if you want to do a large brisket or 4 racks of baby back ribs, it will certainly be tight. On my last cook of a 10 lb brisket, I had to use a rib rack to drape my brisket over on my large till the meat shrank enough to remove the rib rack.
I always use two remote thermometers and it is difficult to get the probes clear so the lid closes properly. I'm glad I started out with my large and I'm considering a "small" for a second egg. -
I think everyone has different needs and hense the different egg sizes. I personally have a medium and mostly cook for two or three. I can do 6 steaks and around 8 hamburgers at a time or 15 pounds of butt on one rack. For me I couldn't be happier with the medium. Less warm up time (less mass), less lump, and same great taste. If I did a lot of entertaining and wanting to cook for 8 or 12 people I would own a large or XL.
I don't think one is enough either so don't sweat the small stuff! -
Hey GG,get your own dealer!!This one's mine :woohoo: He will do anything to keep the customers coming back.I havn't even bought an egg from him(yet)
,but he is always there when I need help or anything else
.Anyway, the medium was my first egg and I still love it.I have stuffed an 18# turkey in it.I usually cook for three, but wanted the second egg for different temps and smoke flavor at the same time.I bought the third egg because it was too good of a deal to pass up :woohoo: That's my story and i'm sticking to it :silly:

I wound up getting the large about three weeks ago. I did quiet a bit of research and reading on this board and found that most have the large and then buy other smaller ones to compliment. When I speak of getting another egg (small) already, people look at me like Im crazy because they wouldnt have paid what I did to get the large. I have my wife, two kids and an occasional other couple for dinner, and my large will put out more than I want. Ive got about 25lbs of pork thats going on tomm night! Whatever you choose you will fall in love with it. When you get it, stick with these veterans and youll be cranking out the best meat you ever grilled in no time. I wish I had bought mine 10 years ago but I feel like I wouldnt have learned all the things I did by making my other junk work!
