Just curious... Has anyone done a cook using wood instead of lump on their Egg. I'm thinking it would be akin to what comes off those choo-choo type smokers.[p]Spring Chicken

Spring Chicken, give Nature Boy a holler - he has tried that at least one time I recall and posted quite a detailed report on it. I recall it was a "done it once, won't do it again thing".

    <p />Howdy Spring Chicken,
I tried an all wood cook with a sirloin tip in my early rookie days, and it was interesting! I wanted to do an all wood cook with no thermometers of any kind...just for a caveman-type experiment. Here are some pics....the meat was nothing short of EXTREMELY smoky, but made for some awesome chili meat.[p]After I got a good base of coals, I added some more wood for the sear. But should have burned all of that to coals before cooking the rest of the way. I bet you could get good results with some practice, and by burning most of the wood to coals first. But the problem is that there is no easy way to add new coals without removing your meat and grates. Maybe a 2/3 grate would help. [p]Bottom line is that it is a challenge to get a clean burn and consistent temps. And if you can avoid oversmoking, you could be getting somewhere! I bet steaks would be great done with all wood. [p]Just back from a nice 5 hour drive from the beach. I think it is time for a nap! My buddy is bringing a big ol' brisket and butt over later on, so should be a long night! Tomorrow is party time.[p]Real cold beers on you!
