The last three times I have posted a reply to another person's post, my puter starts opening more windows all on egghead website. The most it has opened is 40 windows, last time it opened 33 windows and the time before it was 21 windows. This has happened to me in the past, but it was like once every 3 months. Any idea what's going on? Thanks in advance for any advice.

Probably those pesky communists up to their old tricks again. They sometimes pull that stuff on me knowing how it really isses me off. It's part of their MO to leave you alone for a while and then return when you think all is going well.

Maybe someone here has a second thought on it.

    Anti-virus software installed/updated and running ?

I access this site from several different PC's and have never had the issue you speak of.

    Frank,

At times I have had multiple windows open, not on the forum, but that has been from a slow response and my re-clicking.

I am wondering the same thing as Egg-N-Tino. Also, malware/spywear/adware detection, have you checked and cleaned those out.

Not sure if you are aware of this but...

If you don't have the detection/removal software let me know. There are plenty that are free and I will be happy to point you in the right direction. Everyone should run this stuff regularly.

Even with antivirus it is not uncommon to get infected with 30 to 50 infections with a day or two of usage.

However, nothing I have gotten has caused what you are experiencing.

Also, clean out your history, and temp files if you haven't done so in a while.

  • Got McAfee running. It's not just this forum where I have had this problem but it just so happens that it happened the last three times I responded to a post. Let me see if it happens after this response.

    Frank,

I run McAfee also. It doesn't catch all the malware/addware, some of these pesky buggers are brought in to our computers ourself by simply clicking on different links.

  • I'm pretty careful as to what I open. Just ran McAfee Quick Clean and deleteing a bunch of files as I type this message. Keeping my fingers crossed that I didn't blitz anything I need - LOL.

    you running internet explorer?

a lot of malware applications will open up browser windows when you use I/E. McAffee doesn't really do well alone, you need a couple applications that look for spyware, malware, viruses, etc.

If you ever download a great looking free application (it sometimes installs unwanted stuff in the background, to varying degrees of annoyance.

The site doesn't open browser windows. Your browser does that. and if you aren't doing it yourself, well, some other application IS.

try firefox, and see if it stops.
But i'd bet dollars to doughnuts that you have a virus.

  • Yep - running IE. My sons both recommeded Firefox. I'll try that along with Spybot.

    Thanks Lads

I have two machines that run 24/7 fetching information.

Don't be fooled into thinking you are completly protected with running McAfee, or Norton for that matter.

For example, McAfee has run yesterday and the day before and 17 infections were found and eliminated. Ran Spybot no infections. Runing Ad-Aware about 30% done and so far 51 infections have been found.

    Frank,

Here is something you might find interesting.

This is with Win XP-Pro w/Service Pack 3
    IE 7
McAfee running full time with full control & auto scanning.

Yesterday McAfee tested this machine as clear.

    Today after your post.

3 tests in the following order - all definitions current:
. McAfee scan, 17 infections found & removed.
. SpyBot Search & Destroy - no infections
. Ad-Aware just finished. 53 infections detected and 53 removed

Another great program to use, If one gets real serious problems go to TrendMicro and run the free HouseCall program.

I run the HouseCall program once in a while just as a precaution.

    Good luck, Kent
