What is the purpose of fire bricks?

I've been cooking with my BGE for years, but am curious about the use of fire bricks.[p]I've seen the topic mentioned here many times, but why exactly would I need to use them?

    Jason Brooks,
You can use them for several things. One thing is you put a layer of firebrick on the grate and then place your drip pan on the bricks and rack with meat on the drip pan. This is one way of doing a indirect cook. I also use them to prop up a second grid over the first grid to raise the food away from the fire.[p]TNW
