I know you changed the amount of page content recently due to server overload problems, but, the posts are moving to page 2 and beyond way too soon. Need more time to read and respond to the posts.......

    egret,

I know -- I prefer the longer index also. But with the longer index, folks complain about it taking so long to load the page. Plus it slows down the server for everyone. We cannot win on this one.

Most "modern" forums do not display so much index information. They usually break things up into categories to avoid just this sort of problem -- hundreds of posts every day all adding to the same list. Most of our members, however, prefer the "social" nature of this board -- i.e. everything in one big bucket so they don't have to look into several different "room" to find new posts; and, they don't have to figure out which "room" to put their new posts into.

I had originally multiplied the default setting by four to better simulate the length of the original index; so, perhaps something less than four times longer would help some. I'd rather not even go as far a even doubling the length though. I'm not sure you'll even notice much change less than that though.

You might try also, if you haven't already, the "Active threads first" option at the top of the index. We recently added this to make it easier to keep the most active threads on page one of the index. They'll "bounce" around a bit, but the ones folks are responding to will stay near the top.

I just increased the "threads per page" option from 24 to 36, a 50% increase. Way less than four times more like it used to be, but hopefully it will help a little w/out slowing things down too much, and, w/out using up all the server's memory.
