Buying a large used egg and the guy was telling me that the charcoal grate is ceramic, my question is -- not knowing are all charcoal grates like this or is this a older model --- thanks -- jim

    it is a older model!!

mine is cast iron but they all break, warp, or disfigure after ALOT of cooking... but with buying the used one you have no warranty so just keep that in mind...

Perhaps he was talking about the old style grate which sets in the bottom of the fire box and separates the charcoal from the ash bin (looks like a shower drain cover). I understand that they used to be ceramic. I know someone who had an egg with the ceramic grate. After repairing it several times with JB Weld, he replaced it with the new cast iron grate without any problems.

    Hope this helps.

sure that's a sign of an older egg but they were still using them when I bought my large and small eggs 8 years ago. As you can see the holes are fewer and smaller. Once yours cracks just go to a good plumbing supply store and buy a cast iron floor drain of the equivalent size.

That's what I have on my Ancient Egg. Shows some wear on the edges but still in 1 piece. The firebox burnt up which I rebuilt but not the grate.
