Doing spares tomorrow and have run out of Dizzy Pig. I live in Pasadena MD and have no clue where to get an emergency supply. I have some basic spices at home and could probably whip up a quick batch but don't know what to put in there. Since I'm asking questions, what is Turbinado sugar? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, FG

  • don't know much about over the counter rubs, but turbinado sugar can be found in any grocery store, in the baking aisle, next to the white sugar, usually in a box labled "sugar in the raw" . ..same stuff . ..

Here's a general purpose rub that is good. It's from Gfw's site who used to be an egger but had to get rid of it when he moved to a condo. I like it on both beef and pork.

    Memphis Style Rib Rub

Adapted from "The BARBECUE BIBLE - Steven Raichlen"

    The Rib Rub...

    1/4 cup paprika

1 1/2 tablespoons ground black pepper

1 1/2 tablespoons packed dark brown sugar

    1 tablespoon salt

1 1/2 teaspoons ground celery seed

    1 1/2 teaspoons cayenne pepper

    1 1/2 teaspoons garlic powder

    1 1/2 teaspoons dry mustard

    1 1/2 teaspoons ground cumin

Mix it all together and apply liberally to the ribs. The original recipe called for 4-8 hours, I did overnight - about 18 hours.

Ahhh yes turbinado sugar, I felt like I might be the only one that didn't know. I asked earlier last week and got a good response. Turbinado sugar is "sugar in the raw" , it is alot more coarse about like kosher salt is. My wife got it at Meijer, which is a regional grocery. I would think that if you go to a bigger grocery they would also have it...Are you gonna try Dr BBQ's Rub? I made some the other day, and used them on ribs, and they tasted great. Good luck with yours...-Joshua

    Hey dude.
There is a place called Rib'n It BBQ Supplies in Havre De Grace that carries it. Call first, cuz they have some wacky hours.

Turbinado sugar is basically evaporated sugar cane juice. Sometimes called "raw" sugar, it has a richer flavor and higher burning point than the processed sugars (white granulated sugar and granulated brown sugar).

There are some good basic rub recipes that work well on ribs. Google "BRITU" or "Best Ribs in the Universe" for a popular mix.

Good meeting yall in Waldorf. Look forward to a repeat.

  • and here i thought you were gonna load young kennysmash into that special dizzypig rocket of yours, loaded with a shipment of fresh rub, fire him off into a low tra-jec-tor-y-or-bit and land him in pasadena maryland to take care of that familyguy feller there and show of that extra special dizzy pig customer service we keep hearing about. ..:whistle:

The rocket is not working well. Kenny and I talked about it, but we decided it was not worth the risk.
Maybe we could relay it up there? hehe.
