When we get the egg 'fired up' it smokes out the back ( around the seal ) and after a half hour or so it stops. Do you think that all is ok?

an ill fitted lid or gasket causes the lid to fit improperly. This is only an issue, in my opinion, if it is sufficiently bad that it hampers your ability to control the fire. If you can snuff a raging fire by putting the rain cap on and shutting the bottom within say 10 mins, then I say no worries. If not, they you need to fix. The fix can be by resetting the hinge, if it was not set properly, or by replacing the gasket.
I replaced my gasket with a stove gasket some time ago. I am much happier with it, and no leaks.[p]
