Baking apple pie on the grill

I baked an apple pie today in my new small but again it picked up the same tinge of charcoal flavor when I used my large. Has anyone else had the same problem and is there any suggestions on how to prevent it. Thanks

Use another brand lump.

I have a tip use clean out the firebox, grate, plate setter etc. Next use Cowboy Lump charcoal it burns hot and imparts no charcoal flavor according to my toughest critic (my wife :laugh: ) She was real negative with me cooking a pound cake on the egg until I did it. I have made Pumpkin spice cake and several other cakes with no problems. Truthfully, I could cook them in our gas oven because people at work asked me how I cooked it on the egg (they say grill)and I just smile.

I was using wicked good lump but I will try the cowboy.
The firebox etc was clean and the plate setter new. -
pretty much any brand of lump is ok (except something like mesquite). .. .trick is to have a really clean burning fire and no extra wood. . . .have your fire burning a good hour before putting that pie in the egg. .. you have to remember that certain foods pick up more smoke flavor than others.. . .its been my experience that cheese and apples are two things that really absorb the smoke so you have to be careful.. . . next time, along with the clean burning fire, try a peach pie instead. . . for some reason, peaches don't absorb smoke as much as the apples do ... HTH

While they are not apple pies they were cooked in my egg. As Max said the trick is to make sure the egg is burning clean.
Wicked Good is a blend of tropical oaks and should depart a very mild smoke taste if any at all. -
Definitely make sure it is burning clean and that it is fresh lump. I use cowboy also for baking. the best tip is get get another egg that will be a vegetarian
I try to keep our small off any meat :evil: it is nice for pies and breads or anything that you don't want a smoke smell too.
