Does anyone have any idea how to safely secure the Egg on a balcony metal railing...In my area, there are a lot of thieves and I am wondering if there is a safe way to lock it. If not, I'll have to use chains, and if so, how big should the chains be to withstand the really giant plyers thieves use? Does anyone know or have a suggestion?

If you live in an area where you have to worry about someone steeling a BGE OFF OF A BALCONY, you need to start looking for another residence. In the mean time, you need to look into renter's insurance.
On locking up a BGE. You could buy a couple of the cables used to lock up bicycles. You know the ones with a loop on each end that you loop through the bike, around a pole, and lock with a padlock? You could loop that through the bottom vent and out the top of the dome.
Of course, if I was big enough to climb up to your balcony, lift a BGE over the railing, and carry it back down, I could probably bite through a steel cable.

The Egg is on the 2nd floor, but close to some stairs, in the back of the appartment. I wouldn't put it past anyone in these parts to bring a friend where both of them could carry it down the stairs during the night, if they really wanted to steal it. I just don't want to take any risks whatsoever. Just last week my next door neighbor got robbed. Her daughter had left her window opened about 2 inches and someone climbed in her daughter's room, took an ipod, her daughters' purse as well as her own, then climbed back out the window. Thanks for the suggestion.

    Good luck.

    Another thought:
You could shut a mean alley cat up in the Egg. If someone lifts the dome...
No, I guess that wouldn't be such a good idea.

It sounds like, if you don't have renter's insurance, you really should look into it.

Will look into insurance for sure. It would be cheaper though if I could buy a very big chain...so big they couldn't cut through it with their giant plyers. Strange that the BGE company has not found a solution to this problem ...
  • down at my friend's bar. we run a bicycle cable & lock thru the hinge and then either the fence or around a telephone pole. if they want it bad enuf, nothing will stop them though. what size egg are you talking about? it'd be difficult to carry a large down stairs.......

  • Smith & Wesson manufactures a multitude of anti-theft devices. Sounds as if there is more than a Green Egg at risk. One of their offerings may be a good option for your neighborhood.

    Paulette,
You should just keep cooking on it so its to hot to steal. :) Its true if they want it, there going to take it. Its a matter of making it less convenient. First off you could put a motion sensor light on it. You could also put it in a table or something so they would have to lift it up out of table. For our kayaks we have two loops that go each end and then you put a lock in between them to hold them in place, You could try that. Good luck, Pdub

I use my Sig Sauer p226 to make sure nobody takes my egg. Looking to switch over to a Remington 870 soon though. JHP is getting expensive, whereas buckshot is cheap.

    Paulette,

I've thought about this myself. As soon as I get some time, I'm going to buy what I'll call a "contact alarm". I dont know what they're really called, but they have them pretty cheap at lowes or HD. These alarms are basically 2 pieces with magnets, and if the magnetic connection is broken, the alarm goes off at a piercing 90db. This wont help you if you arent home, but it ought to generate some attention and maybe someone will get a good luck at your thieves if they havent given up already. It would at least make the extremely conspicuous task of lugging a large BGE down the stairs even more noticable.

I havent quite ironed out the logistics, but here's my thoughts. I could tie fishing line or something to my nest and then the other end to one side of the contact. THe other side of the contact I'll mount under my deck. If they start to roll the egg towards the stairs (I'm hoping they're lazy like that), the fishing line will pull tight and break the connection setting off the alarm. The problem is, if they take the egg out of the nest, then that plan is foiled. I havent had time to really look at it, but I'm going to see if there's a way to connect it to the grill itself and still have it stand up to the heat and use.

Either way, you get my point. This will give you a lot of added security for not much at all and you wont have to look at the unsightly chains that can easily be cut.

    Hope that helps!

If you live in an area where they will steal an Egg you need to MOVE!! They steal stuff they can easily pawn off or sell. Where are they going to sell an Egg?? Think about that one.

All a lock and key does is keep honest people honest.

How about putting a lockable T-bar under your grate, one that is too big to get out of your lower vent? A piece of angle iron with a heavy-duty eye welded to it would do the trick. When not in use, you can thread a cable lock through it, out the lower vent and around something stout to prevent theft. When you want to cook, just unlock the cable and take it out to allow the lower vent to close fully.

A disk just a little smaller than the ID of your Egg's bottom would work, too, with an eye welded to it for the cable lock.

Thank you all for your wonderful suggestions. Will let you know how I make out... The Smith and Wesson is the greatest idea yet, but I'd have to be on watch night and day. Keeping the Egg going night and day is also a fullproof method. I'll keep you posted on my decision.
Come to think about it, selling a stolen egg can not be as easy as selling a stolen bike...
