friggin camera died, seems like i get just about 2 years on one. which ones last and still give a great pic, almost thinking i need to buy a cheaper one for the tackle bag and a good one for the house. had a nice pic of a bacon wrapped pearl hot dog stuffed with a slow simmered saurkraut with onions and cider vinegar/brown sugar mix, some cheddar cheese in a grilled sub roll with onions and peppers steeped in a raspberry walnut vinagarette with chunky bluecheese and thousand isle dressing. a little over kill for a hot dog, but im still thinking about it. is there a good camera in the 300 dollar range, or do i need to spend a little more.

I recently acquired a Pentax 110D which is a digital SLR. I chose it becasue I had a LOT of old Pentax lenses that I can use with it. The entry level SLR digital cameras (Pentax, Nikon, Milnolta, Olympus, etc) are around 6 Megapixels and in the $500 range. The newer models are around 14 Megapixels and around $2000. I'll stay with the older models for now.
I really like this model as it allows me to do extreme closeups and I can use a better flash with it. I have also heard good things about teh Nikon D-40 as well. -
I like Nikon digital, mine is a coolpix 7.1 megapixels, and paid no more than 300 2 years ago,
plus a 1 GB SD card, now I´m sure you could get a better one .at a better price.
Try this:

Good luck. -
I've had a Nikon Coolpix 990 for years and can't asy enough about it. Here's a place where you can read reviews and check prices: http://www.digitalcamera-hq.com/digital-cameras/nikon_ratings.html

Yep, a cheap camera for dangerous environments is the way to go. I have a $100 panasonic for lump charcoal photos in case I drop it in the bag of charcoal or into the fire. I use a Canon 20D now, but and debating between a 40D or a 5D or a 5D+ when Canon finally announces the "new 5D". But that doesn't help you much, unfortunately. You might check out www.dpreview.com as they have a feature where you can compare features side by side. If you find some reviews of models you are interested in, you can read the conclusions page if you aren't into all the techy details. However, I doubt any sites are going to give you "will they last" information. Consumer Reports might, but they are a subscription site. (If you pick a model or two and want to know what they say, email me and I'll check.) Good luck! The Naked Whiz

Nikon has been pushing a newer one, but I recently got a CoolPix S-51. It's much thinner, and friendlier than the other Nikons I've owned, and the playback screen is huge in comparison to others. It takes great macro photo shots, and it has 8.1 megapixels. I'm sure it's well under $300. (it was a gift). Take a look at this one. I think you'd like it.

I have found that unless you are shooting what would otherwise require medium or large format, a simple point and shoot will do just fine. I have a 5 and a 6 megapixel that if I want to I can enlarge a print to 8x10 without becoming grainy. When I shop for a camera I don't care about bells and whistles, I just want something that will do a good job for a long time. I bought a Gateway that lasted about 3 years and had poor pic quality after about 6 months. Then I bought a Kodak easyshare, excellent quality, user friendly, very simple to use. Gave that one to my wife and bought myself one too. It is just as good.

BTW the second one was on sale for $77 tax included. -
I've had my Cannon Power Shot A85 for several years now and it has capabilities I've never even tried. I know I gave less than $300 for it and have never had any problems.Re-gasketing the USA one yard at a time

thats what im using or was using, an easyshare z700, i think it was an earlier version of yours. only thing i didnt like was the autofocus on darker days, night, and indoors, took along time to get a focus lock. other than that it did fine, mine was a 4 mega pix. the zoom lense locked up on it so it cant start or shut down now. if you ever open yours up, beware the capasitor for the flash, my finger has been stinging for a couple hours now, its really got a bite to it. i think im going with the nikon or cannon this time but im going to look aroundfukahwee maineyou can lead a fish to water but you can not make him drink it

Ready whenever you are C.B.! (old joke)
What a tragedy to miss that shot, now you are going to have to make another on to eat and shoot.
I have been using a Canon S60 a couple of years old, wouldn't really reccomend it, it has an irritating habit of shutting itself off when zooming. I wanted something I could put in my pocket. It has been reliable and gets good mileage. -
My pocket camera is an Olympus model that has been going strong for over 3 years.
I also have a Nikon D40x that you can get now in the $400 range if you look around. The prices continue to drop and a digital SLR camera is a very nice tool to have.
If you want the portability and lower expense of a smaller camera then I think the DPReview site is a wealth of knowledge and comparisons to find what you want. -
Pansonic Lumix TZ5. Just released. $300 at Costco.
I LOVE this camera. 10x in a hand held point and shoot with a damn smart computer makes it simple even for a dummy like me. Or skip the computer if that's your thing.
I had the TZ1 and the TZ3. Liked them both but the TZ5 makes them look like kids toys.

Same here, I have been using the 20D for several years now and find it quite functional. Last night my son stopped by and gave me a chance to play with his new 40D and it is a vast improvement. I ordered one last night from Amazon. Should be here later this week.

I just picked up a 40D a couple weeks ago.
The 3" LCD screen alone was worth the money.
I was doing the toss up between 40D and 5D as well.
I thought the larger LCD screen would help me more than the full size chip. The EP-EX15 eye piece is also very nice to have. Keeps your nose out of the LCD screen. No regrets. So much faster than my 20D.
I purchased mine from a small camera shop in IN called Gary's Camera. They were super nice people. I got the 40D, battery grip, 17-85mm IS for $1600. I also picked up a Canon G9 to use a light weight back up. It will use all my Canon flash equipment as well as shoot in RAW mode.

I also got the 40D a few months ago. Having used the 20d a 1D and a 1Dmk2 cameras, the 40D sure beats them all for reproducing colors. I shoot lots of soccer and I do see a difference when I compare the pictures.

i am using an older model of this with a 3x optical zoom instead of the 5x that this one offers.
for a point and shoot i am pretty happy with it. i like the preset functions. they have one on my camera called cusine ...specifically designed for food pics. while these are not RTD or Beli quality i am happy with it.

I have a Sony DSC-S60 that I use for work. Most of my food shots are done with a Nikon D-40X.
