lower air intake

I've been considering buying the BGE, I have noticed that the lower air intake is made of pretty low quality material. Has anyone had a problem with it?

    wtb,
I've had my Egg for over three years now and I have the lower air vent you must be refering to. I do keep MR. Egg covered. At the moment it looks fine very little rust.
However, the new Eggs I see at my dealers have a stainless steel lower vent and he tells me they are available if I need to replace mine any time soon. Don't let something like the lower vent deter you from getting next to some of the best food you'll ever taste. Nothing I've seen out there is perfect but, our Eggs come the closest!
Go get you Egg and start enjoying food the way we do.

wtb, I've had a BGE with a stainless bottom vent for two years, completely exposed to the elements. I see absolutely no signs of rust or wear-and-tear. Solid.
  • wtb,[p]While the material is not heavy the metal is stainless steel and stainless steel is very durable. I expect mine to last many many years. Not to insult your knowledge, but just for comparison, this is the material used to make kitchen sinks. Certainly a more challenging environment than the air vent on the BGE.
  • wtb,
I have and old Kamado cooker (same as BGE just not as good)
and I had a "metal" plate of some sort down there for about 18 yrs before it rusted so bad I had to replace it.[p]When I did replace it, I ordered a stainless slider damper from BGE, it works perfectly, and I expect it to last way longer than 18yrs. [p]It's doesn't weigh 800lbs, but I wouldn't call it weak or flimsy either. It's plenty solid for the job.

    wtb,
Get the stainless steel upgrade. I've had mine for a little over a year uncovered in south Louisiana heat and humidity and have had NO problems. Don't let that be what stops you.
