Starting Small

I just mailed an order for a small BGE to be picked up at the Waldorf EGGfest. All the responses to my questions about size convinced me that we would eventually have a small egg and a bigger one. This will get us started and give us time to think about how big a bigger egg is right for us. We'll get a nest with the SBGE so even the table issue can be put off for a while.

In the meantime, the next items on the agenda are finding local sources of lump and deciding what accessories for the small we just can't live without.

    Hi Jersey Doug,
I would get a Plate Setter for the Small BGE right away.

    Click on link

Also I would recommend getting the Cast Iron Grate they make for the small BGE... That is if you want Nice grill marks on your STEAKS. Otherwise, you can live without it. I would also recommend buying a Thermapen right away. Fred's store sells them too!

    Hope this helps, Pharmeggist

They will have an entire shop set up with all the EGGcesories on sale up at Waldorf.

I'd reccomend a small plate setter, small V-Rack and you can stock up on lump there also.

I'm sure they will have all of the stuff you would want or need at a good price. It's also one of the friendliest staffs to help you out.

Come find me when you're there and I'll introduce you to all the great folks at Seasonal.

    Jersey Doug,
Sometimes the most obvious things are the ones we overlook. Bobby-Q is right!! Sitting in the middle of Waldorf Egg-fest you will be like a Wino locked in a Wine Store overnight  You probably can tell me what I need after you get your egg

Congrats...it took my neighbor a whole 2 weeks to decide to upgrade from the small to the large egg.

Thanks! It's not really an upgrade, is it, if they kept the small? I'm pretty sure that whatever bigger egg we decide on I'll still be doing most of my cooking on the small. (It's roughly the same size as the Weber Smoky Joe that I've been using regularly for a number of years.)

I have a Medium and a Small. I use each for a different type of cook. I don't worry about the amount of lump I'm using [although the Small will use less].

What's good about two eggs [or Three!] is the ability to do different types of cooks simultaneously at different temps. Like slo-roasting porks and then doing veggies on the other just before the meal.

I don't put meat in my Small... I keep it "clean" so I can bake bread, pies, etc., any time.

If you choose the right lump, avoid starter cubes, you can avoid after tastes in stuff like apple pies...

    Enjoy!

  • Great start!. My first BGE was a large and then I added the small. Couldn't find a dealer locally that stocked the small so I took a short trip to Waldorf and purchased one from Seasonal. Great people to deal with and a great cooker. Like everyone said, looking at all the accessories will seem like Christmas in May.

Then just a month or so ago,I got a great (to good to pass up)deal on an XL egg.I don't need it,but figured what the hell. :woohoo: I have only cooked on it three times and I was just playing.I am still using the other two eggs most of the time and saving my money so that I can fill the XL with meat

Hey Eggtucky,You can have it in 6 months.I plan on starting over.I got to get the XL under a roof and I don't think it will fit in the middle  I also plan on adding a sink out there. This new project should make me self contained and no reason to go inside ever.(except for #2) :woohoo:

    Doug,

I am SOOOO jealous! What a nice setup you've got there! That is fantastic! A place truly worthy of three BGEs. The night shot is the best, you've really worked out the lighting well. A setup like that is definitely going on my wish list.
