Howdy!

I am brand new to this forum and anxiously awaiting the arrival of my new LBGE. Ordered it yesterday and it will take 10 days to arrive from the factory. So I've been spending the last several days (since I found this place) pouring over the posts, recipes, and great looking pictures of wonderfully prepared meals. I've been grillin' and smoking since 1990 and each time I do it I seem to learn something new.

Since I have a bit of time on my hands, I thought I would see what the first thing you smoked or grilled on your Egg.

Thank you in advance for posting your thoughts!

I think I did a simple hamburger and steak grill the first time out. My first smoke was a pork butt. I think I stayed up all night for fear of the fire going out.

Howdy back, welcome to what some call the cult. It sounds like you've kinda found your way around the fourm. Hang around, ask questions, enjoy the fellowship. I've found that you can ask a question 24/7 and someone will respond, which leads me to believe that everyone here is either retired and can't sleep or they are insainly wealthy and can't sleep, or they are like me and need to work more but are addicted to learning about this crazy little thing call BGE.

We love pic's so post often with lots of pic's.

This was venison steak night. Not my first cook but I think number 3 or 4. My first was pork tenderloin.

  • Most here suggest doing cooks under 400 for the first few cooks. Best burgers you have ever tasted, fatties, chicken, ABT's, Pig Candy, ect. ect. Take your time and play with vents adjusting to different temps. Biggest thing I had to learn was cooking to meat temps and not time. Good instant read thermometer like Thermopen was one of my best purchases. Any questions, post it and someone will help you. Welcome to the cult, I meam club!

    Court Jester,

It's been many years for me but I think Bill has it right. Spatchcocked chicken with Dizzy Pig
It's better to familiarize yourself with the egg for the first few cooks.

    Cheers

Hey Steven, glad to see ya again.I've been wonderin where you were.I'm still not sure about the XL.I have only used it twice. It does seem to use more lump, but I figured it would.I am used to the medium and small, this is a big change :woohoo: Maybe it will come in handy during football season. It is still just a new toy,and I need to figure out how to play with it. :woohoo: New eggs are always fun,but I am still trying to convince my wife that I need it. :woohoo:

I had the Eggs for almost a month before I fired them up. Was and still waiting for completion of outdoor kitchen, but first cook was 3 spatchcocked chickens and haven't looked back. It was moist and delish, best chicken she has ever tasted said the wife. And did pork butts last weekend and like doug-123 says they are the sh*t!!
  • alwaysgolf, must have missed your pics of your little cook shack Post it again if you don't mind. I was drooling with envy at the const. pics.
  • Unfortunately I did not lurk on the forum for a while before my first cook. I cooked a couple shrimp kabobs and then fried my gasket TRexing some 1-1/2" ribeyes. The ribeyes were outstanding. :) Did't realize my gasket was fried until I had a difficult time opening the dome the next morning. :(

Good advice to geaux sleaux. The forum and a few websites will expedite the learning process.

well......the first thing that I cooked was chicken and it turned out okay

I had never ever cooked with any type of charcoal prior to buying my BGE in June 06. I also had no-one in my life to teach or even guide me on how to cook with charcoal

I jumped in head first with no life preserver and have been cooking every since. I smoke a killer a$$ BB with pecan wood and my own rub and I like to think that it is
    the "best ever"

I can T-rex a steak like mad and now I have fallen in love with the flat iron steak.

The best thing about my BGE is that i HAVE LEARNED NOT TO MICRO MANAGE MY FOOD AND i HAVE LEARNED PATIENCE. sorry about caps...not the best typer

anywhooo enjoy your new toy .....the toy that you never grow tired of........just a side note....go buy some bigger pants, your gonna need 'em

    :side:
  • The first time I fired up my egg I was a little concerned about maintaining temps, etc so I chose something that would be easy and quick. That would be a couple of pork tenderloins. That first cook taught me that maintaining temps was a lot easier than I thought and the tenderloins were fantastic. Now I do grilling, smoking, baking on the egg and can't imagine using anything else.
