Handling the grid extender?

Is there a good way to handle that floppy extender? I try to spread the legs as far as possible so it is stable - but it's a little wobbly. Is there a special way to handle it?

    just spread them and snap tight over the opposing grates. I can easily and securely pick up both grates that way.

    People seem to want to just set it on the grate, but it needs to be stretched tight.

    mine used to be pretty loose fitting also. i clamped mine in a vise about halfway up the legs and bent them slightly inward so they fit tighter when stretched.
