Weed burner tank?

I was interested in the mapp or propane torch ignition ideas - but mapp is a little pricey and a weedburner is at harbor freight for $27. Do I have to use a big ugly propane tank for it (such as one that goes on a gasser) or are there smaller tanks out there that would work?

I tried the plumber type propane torch, but when I would tip it over, the flame would go out. Does it need to heat up first?

Yes you do need the old gasser tank for the weed burner but you can get to TRex temps in 2-3 min. I don't use it for low temp cooks because it lights the whole top.

  • oh no you don't! :woohoo:

i got this little adapter that you can use the small, camp type propane tanks with.

i got my adapter at a grill store, where i got one of my eggs, but u-haul has them cheaper:

be careful to not let the propane tank fall over and let liquid in the hose... always point the weed burner away from combustibles when in use (except when lighting the lump). USE EXTREME CAUTION AT ALL TIMES!

To answer your other question - the cheap propane bottles usually will not work when upside down.

The weedburner is a good tool. I love mine and use it for every cook. Like RIck said - be careful and wear eye protection. The lump pops and sparks a pretty good bit when using the burner.

I use mine on a standard propane bottle. It isn't that much of a hassle to carry the bottle to the egg, light it, then put the bottle away.

In the long run, despite the initial cost, I think you'd be better off & happier with the mapp torch. It's fast, easy to use and takes up very little space. I've been using mine for months on the first bottle to light my large Egg. Takes about 3, 30 second burns in 3 spots to get a good burn going.

  • yes sir... always wear safety glasses when lighting with a weed burner. i've found to minimize the sparkies when lighting, put used lump on the top and fresh lump underneath. fresh lump with a lot of dust sparks more than dustless

I agree that the new lump sparks more. I have had a few pop and send a good sized piece of lump in the the air, that then pops again and sends a shower of sparkies. I have had a hole burned in the top of the shoulder of a T-shirt - so another piece of advice is not to use it wearing nice clothes.

On most cooks I light the used lump, then add more new lump on top of that if I think I will need more. Only exception is a low and slow.

i have my tank bungeed to a hand truck and wheel it out of the garage when it is egg time
  • if your house ever catches fire, the fire department will not be very proud of you keeping a propane tank in your garage.
