I have a medium and it has become pretty dirty with a sticky, black coating onthe inside of the dome.....I've tried firing it up to nuke-type temps, but it wont get clean. Is there any danger using a pressure washer to clean it off (being careful not to cut the ceramic)?

    I wouldn't do that.

After an hour at 550-600, let it cool (obviously), then use a crumbled ball of aluminum foil and rub it all over the inside of the dome. All that black stuff should flake off pretty easily.
  • follow fidel's instructions do it twice if needed . if your egg is really gunky do not do a long nuke temp clean . won't bore you with my sad tale just don't. hotter ain't better.

Six inch paint scraper at Home Depot. Use both hands to flex and bend to conform to the top dome and scrape away! Works fine.

Why bother cleaning it?That black gunk just adds more flavor to your food. :woohoo: :silly:
  • Cleaned mine the other day following Fidel's recommendation. Took apart and shop vacced it afterwords. Came out fine. Seemed like it took a while (quite a while) for the "bad" smoke to clear up on the first cook after cleaning. Probably burning off wee bits of soot heere and there that the shop vac couldn't pick up. The process works great though.
  • we're supposed to clean the dome???

    when?

I have been wondering about this too. I have seen lots of cooking pics from veteran eggers and the inside surfaces of their eggs, rings, plate setters, etc. look almost as white and clean as a brand new egg.

I did several high temp burns for up to an hour each time and I have lightly scraped the dome with a brush. It does get a bit cleaner but it is still basically a brownish black color. Also, my fire ring and the top sides of the fire box are pretty gunky. Is the trick to keep brushing for a long while? What about the fire ring - brush it too?

And when it comes to cleaning out the egg with a vac: is there a trick to removing the fire ring? It seems to fit pretty snugly against the inside of the egg and there aren't any holes to grab onto.
  • I can get everything but the dome white with a 1 hr burn at 500.
