one of my friends is famous for his stir fry and I was wondering how well a wok would work directly on the coals or would we be better off with a turkey fryer flame?

I have woks for both my Large and my Small. They work very well. I have Chubby's Gratemate for the small which has a spider ring which the wok sits in. For the large I have TJV's spider.

Wok works great on the Egg.
Lots of folks post great looking cooks they do in Woks on the Egg.
I've done a few myself, plus it's more fun than doing it indoors. -
what you need to do is bring the egg up to 700/800 degrees, open the dome and shut the lower vent completley and let the flames settle down, its plenty hot to wok on. i use a spider upsidown that fits my wok with a handle perfectly and wok dome open. this was my first attempt with some spicey orange chicken. im not going to tell you that the deep fry part is safe, but i had no problems with it.

Woking on the egg works great:
I use TJV's spider from eggaccessories.com He also has a nice wok that fits well in the large egg.
You control the temp using only the bottom damper and cook with the lid open. There is an about a 3/4 inch airspace between the wok and the fire ring.
Use Leather welding, or Silicon Orca gloves on one hand to hold the wok and to remove it from the fire when not actively stir frying so it doesn't over heat. The steel can glow red hot if left empty over the coals too long . . .
