why do we have the time limitation?

I have bit my tongue and stayed quiet through all this conversion. Personally I get tired of the steps necessary to sign in and then jump through the hoops to get where I want to be. Why is the inactivity of (I think) 1 hour and you get thrown out the door like a bum? Why can't it be extended to 2 or 3 hours?

    RRP,

Well, there are a couple of different issues here.
I agree that it could be easier to log in; and, when you do, you should be able to go directly to the forum (or whereever you want to be).
It would be better also if the "remember me" feature worked correctly.
And, it would be nice if the forum provided a simple means of logging in to make a post (actually it does, but I need to improve it more still).

The other issue is the length of the time out. We can increase it to two or perhaps even three hours. Changing this value is easy; however, it means that the "who's online" list will "claim" folks are online that really aren't. At the moment, you know that if they are listed, then they've been active within the past hour. If we bump it up to three hours, then it becomes, "active w/in the past three hours". That may not be so bad, but if we go to 24 hours, then it starts to get silly.

Probably, with first issue(s) fixed, the timeout would be less of a problem. But, perhaps in the meantime (because fixing these issues takes some time), we can bump the timeout up some to reduce the "pain" factor.

Thanks for the explanation. I guess I'm in the minority here as I personally don't see the perceived value in knowing who else is currently signed on. In other words I see this board as a watering hole where eggers drop by and leave posts for whatever reason. If I want to ask someone a question I email them as I already know their address from years being on the forum or I can use the pass-through contact email the new board offers. In the meantime I'll hang tough! Please know that I, like numerous others appreciate the time and effort you are still putting into this conversion. Ron
  • I agree, FWIW. If the reason for the timeout is primarily for the "Who's Online" feature, then I'd say scrap the "Who's Online" feature. I'd bet the poll about how desirable "Who's Online" is would end up quite differently if folks knew how it worked and the effect it has on login time.

    All,

I just bumped the timeout up to 24 hours until we can find a better solution.
That means that "Who's online" will show anyone that's been online in the past 24 hours -- that's no so bad....
