Gasket burning
Beli
Posts: 10,751
Got a new LGE . The 2nd time I cooked High searing ribeyes..(TRex recipe), although I only went up to 650° & burped the egg etc. there was a very strong smell of burnt gasket..is this normal????? will this reduce the life of the gasket? is there a way of avoiding this???

Gasket burning maybe the weak link of the Trex method.
At high temps make sure the top and bottom vents are wide open to ensure that fire is getting max air flow. However, you still might have burning of the gasket at these high temperatures. My gasket is "seasoned" (ie. burnt) but doesn't leak smoke. -
generally, you should ease into the high heat cook. new-user syndrome can play a part, but mainly we've been advising a "break-in" period to help set the gasket. whether you truly need to or not, i dunno. but makes sense.
first thing, though, if you can still keep temps stable, you are fine. even if the gasket is burnt. no big deal. if it's falling off, well, that's a thing that needs to be fixed.
the gasket is a sacrifical item. think of it as an oil filter. some of us ride it for thousands of miles beyone what it should go. you might end up changing out the gasket every couple years.
you probably smeeled the glue. have you looked at the gasket this morniing? can you open the lid? sometimes the gasket sticks after a high heat stink-fest. if it's stuck, try sliding a stiff paint scraper in, and working it around. it only takes a small area of melted -together gasket to make you think the whole thing is clamped down. don't force it, just try to slice them apart. an olfa-blade razor cutter might have the reach you need.
try to let your gasket age a bit. 450/500 or under for a while and see if you still smell the 'melty' smell.
how long were you at sear temps?ed egli avea del cul fatto trombetta -Dante -
you type A guys are funny. Hehehehe

Thanks for the advise. Actually it is not glued & I could open it afterwards......I just went up to searing temps for about 10 min.

You mean as in Alfa male? hahaha........ :woohoo:

yer cool. you just smelled "new gasket", that's all.

Comming from pyro, I take this as a very valuable advise. Thanks

stike?
the artiste?
The detail man?
to know him is to love him, at least that's what his wife said. I think. -
Also, do the "dollar bill" test. Sometimes the top isn't seated perfectly, and a piece of paper can slide between and along the gaskets. If there is a gap, super hot gasses will pass by the gasket, and start burning it up. If you find a gap, refer to the BGE assembly instructions for how to attach and seat the dome. A perfect seal can be achieved by as little as loosening a few nuts, and re-tightening with the dome sitting flat.
-
I hope "The Peso bill" test works just as well since I´m in México. Tks for the advise

i'd say most of my work the past year has been about suppressing detail!
i tend to break down an image as much as i can lately. most of my stuff lately has been early in a project when there's almost nothing resolved. much more fun.

LOL.... and there comes out that comedian again!! good one.! -
I had to take my large to the "Mothership" this week because I couldn't get my new nomex seal to seal. While I was there John told me most burnt seals are cuased by a ceramic problem and not a heat problem unless you are Trexing something. By ceramic problem he meant the top wasn't properly mounted on the bottom which can be caused by several problems. In my case it was the bands and the top had a wave in the base that was out of tolerance causing my top not to seat properly, thus causing my seal to burn.
