OVER TEMP DAMAGE?
hello all,
i tried my hand at smoking a goose last week. it turned out only ok. while cooking the goose i got the commensurate amount of grease which i planed for and caught with a drip pan. i tried to keep the temp down around 200 for approx 5 hours. even at this low temp the grease spattered and sizzled in the pan and off the bird enough to lightly coat the inside of the egg. i thought after i was finished that i would run the temp up to kinda burn out the grease so i opened her up wide open . it still had plenty of charcoal and started puffing good . i went inside to put the bird up and promptly forgot about the egg for the moment. 20 minutes later i started back out and noticed the thermometer was near 100 or 150 degrees. i thought the egg might have gone out and then i realized OH NO it was way past the 750 degrees shown...near 900 or 1000 degrees?
i don't see any cracks.
have i damaged my egg?
is it safe to use?

omg..prolly not but surprised you have any gasket left...that could be really dangerous thinking you were at 150 and being at 900..you didn't burp before you opened?? No flashback??

My mini did that 5-6 years ago....got so hot it popped the plastic face off the dome thermometer. Haven't had any trouble with it since.
-
yea...those old plastic faced thermometers had a habit of doing that - glad BGE dumped those for the flat faced ones. I had one pop and shoot 10 feet and I never bothered to recover the dial just pitched it.Re-gasketing the USA one yard at a time

Probably not damaged but that baby sure is clean!!!Fred A. Bernardo , owner of Tasty Licks BBQ Supply in Shillington, Pa.

Not to worry,
about once a month i do a 800 plus degree burn to keep everything clean and free of gunk.
Cleanse through fire. -
most of the r "my house burned down stories" include the phrase "i walked away from the egg..."
your egg is probably ine. worst that might happen is the gasket fusing together. but sounds like that didn't happen. the egg got a heckuva lot hotter when the made it than we can ever get it.ed egli avea del cul fatto trombetta -Dante -
once i saw it was way hot i just snuck up on it, closed the vent, put the cap on it and ran away.
there was no need to open it. -
What!
You didn't take advantage of the moment and TRex some rib-eyes?
:pinch: -
you're smarter than me..I woulda had to open it and look..just a reflex..woulda prolly singed ever hair on my face and head!!

ive cooked the 53 second pizza at 1100 degrees, i dont have gaskets on that egg, but what you have to watch for is thermal expansion on the metal bands, if you opened it and were not careful, there is a good chance the bands would have been loose enough for the dome to fall off. great pizza, but riskyfukahwee maineyou can lead a fish to water but you can not make him drink it

 I would have loved to have been a little mouse with a camera, the panic and worry about the egg would make a good shot.! LOL sorry Julieonce i saw it was way hot i just snuck up on it, closed the vent, put the cap on it and ran away.
