Pat Moore, let's talk first about what I consider the "mandatories" and then we can discuss accessories. The things you must have are a dome thermometer, a top vent daisy wheel (or slide top if anyone still has one), a starter (either an electric starter or the starter cubes) and of course - lump charcoal. [p]After that there are a few accessories I have found extremely useful. The first is a set of grill tongs. Trying to lift the grill without a pair can be frustrating (and painful). The old ash tool gets a lot of votes for scraping out the ashes through the bottom vent. Then you might want some type of cart (nest or whatever) for it to sit in. For the grill it self you will find that some type of drip pan and a rack is very useful for roasts. A pizza stone and plate setter ( a three legged piece of ceramic) can come in handy. Finally a grill extender can give you more grill space when cooking ribs, chicken or other realatively flat items.[p]Then you will want to acquire (or make) some rubs and sauces for your meats.[p]However, you will enjoy just the BGE and the "mandatories" if that's what your budget limits you to right now.

Wise One,
Good start but you left out a Polder (or two). A Polder (or other similar unit) is a digital thermometer with a probe on a wire. A must have, IMHO. [p]You may also consider fire bricks in place of the plate setter for indirect cooking. [p]Then you will *need* a good digital camera so that you can post pics of all the great grub you'll be making. Mmmmm. Digital Camera....[p]Matt.

South O, digital camera!!! How could I have forgotten??? You're right about the Polder. And seeing as I now own 6 of them (I keep finding bargains-$5 and under - on them) I should have remembered them. And seeing as how I use the firebricks more than my pizza stone, you would have thought I would have remembered them. Now I'm about to build myself the ultimate accessory - a lump box with a hardware cloth bottom so all the dustsettles away from the lump.
