Temperture Rings....Revisited.
First off, Kudos to MickeyT for his temp ring idea. I was thinking about these temp rings and came up with a few ideas for improvments. I worked up a design that I'm gonna have the tool room where I work whip up when they have a chance. I've included a 3d rendering of the design on this post. Other renderings to follow. Here's the basic idea:[p]All the temp rings are connected by a vertical shaft (so they stay together and in order).[p]The holes in the temp ring are calibrated by the hole's area, not the hole diameter. This hopefully will provide a good base for testing.[p]I added a 1/8" dowel pin to retain the temp ring being used for the cook. This will allow the egg to be opened without losing the temp ring.[p]Finally, I added a rain deflector.[p][p]I welcome all constructive comments & suggestions.[p]Thanks,[p]lns

lo n' slo: These pictures are so cool. Thanks! [Note, by the way, that this "temperature ring" project has become an informal, ad hoc multi-party collaboration. Prior to the Internet, this would have been impossible. I think that the pace of innovation will continue to accelerate.]

lo n' slo,
Instead of making a special adadpter for the base why not just design it around the base of the daisy wheel. Just remove the wheel, you'll allready have a tapped whole for your shaft.
-
lo n' slo, you have described the philosophy used in aperture development for photography. f16 is 1/2 the area of f11 which in turn is 1/2 the area of f8. Now, if you could create an adjustable iris like a camera lens for these t-stops (temperature stops) we'd have it made. [p]I do like your idea. What are planning to make the pieces out of? Aluminum, steel????
-
Wise One,
I'm looking into the adjustable iris design. I have a feeling it might be cost prohibitive. I plan on making the prototype out of aluminum with a stainless shaft.[p]lns

Big Daddy,
You'll notice that the adapter is recessed where the bottom of the shaft connects to it. This allows the lower, unused temp rings to be rotated 180 degrees and lowered out of the way of the temp ring being used. I don't think I can accomplish this modifying the daisey wheel top.[p]lns
-
lo n' slo,
What's the need to rotate the lower (larger holed) ones out of the way? The one with the smallest hole is the only one that regulates the egg temperature and it's allways on top no matter what hole size you're using for a particular cooking temp.

Big Daddy,
I know what you mean. Maybe I got a little over complicated. I was trying to accomplish two things with this design. One, if only one ring is being used, the other seven are being retained by the flats on the adapter and the ring being used is being retained by the 1/8" dowel pin. This would allow the egg to be opened and no settings would change on the temp ring assembly thingy. Two, I was kinda hoping the mass of the other seven rings sitting away from the direct chimney heat would act as a heat sink for the parts nearer the heat and help dissipate some of their heat.[p]lns
