Maverick probe - Infared Thermo

I think I smoked my Maverick probe because I get the dreaded HHH. Can't find the instructions, but I think I remember reading that this is a no-no. Also remember reading that they sell a higher temp probe...which I'll get. I have an infared digital laser thermometer that I use to measure things on the boat...can I use that in a pinch? It will only measure the outside temperature....of course. Your thoughts? Thanks.
