no plate setter/ how do I indirect without it?

I'm in no way an expert on briskets. In fact I've made shoe leather out of two of them, so far. Gonna do another one this week. Still leaning, but if you put a barrier between the lump and the grid, you'll be cooking indirectly. A drip pan with some liquid (apple juice & apple cider vinegar, or even water) will act enough in this manner to give you an indirect setup. I must say, however, your plate setter is so cool, and so well designed, you'll really be glad when you receive it.
Please let us know the result and the details of your brisket cook. I can use a lot of help too. Take some pictures if you can.
By the way, when I came in the forum asking for advice about why I screwed up my flats so badly, the number one response was quality of the meat. Use CHOICE or better!

It's cheating but after browning both sides ( about 1 1/2 hrs at 250 per side) place in foil tray with liquids. I use 1 beer, 1/4 cup brown sugar, minced garlic, horseradish, worcestershire sauce, tabasco and the rest of the spice rack
. return to grill covered at low temps (250) for 3 hrs. not much different that a pot roast. The cooking liquids are a little strong so I usually discard & serve with au jus. Hope it works for you.

Bob m,
Anything that will shield the meat from the direct heat of the coals will suffice. A disposable pan, some fire bricks, a pizza stone, even a small cookie sheet would work. Can you rig up some type of double grid. this would allow you to place brisket on it and shield below. Some have even wired a disposable pan to the bottom of thier regular grid. [p]Mike

Bob m,
Try putting "split" firebricks on your cooking grid for indirect cooking. (Splits are half the thickness of regular firebricks.) Split firebricks work as well as a plate setter and cost only a few dollars. You can get firebricks at a masonry or brick supplier and, perhaps, a home center. A pizza stone will do, too.
