Recently bought a small to go with my large egg and I thought I would try out the Mad Max crab cakes recipe on the Dizzy Pig site.

Followed the recipe to a 'T.'

The verdict: The crab cakes are fantastic. I was kind of surprised the first two bites because I guess I'm used to the taste of the oil with the fried crab cakes. After not expecting the fried taste, I realized that these are better, and better for you! Served with a bit of store bought remoulade to which i added a tiny bit of cayenne pepper. Maybe would add the cayenne to the crab meat mixture next time before cooking. Leftovers make a fine sandwich. Highly recommended!

  • You lucky man.

I am trying to convince my wife to let me get a small.

How long did you have the large before you broke down and got the small?

BTW, those crab cakes look awesome. I love me some crab cakes.

Wow, gotta give that one a go! Sure looks good! What are you cooking them on and what was the source of your crab meat? Haven't seen that before... Some kind of disposable product? Thanks!

  • Thanks for the kind words. My wife gave me the large as a wedding gift, and I got it delivered probably mid-September. By far the best gift i ever got. She loves it and indulged me enough to let me get a small about 7-10 days ago. It might of had something to do with my promising to cook a bunch of stuff for her planned Superbowl party (try that line--it's a good one).

Been getting killed at work and have only been able to cook on the new fella once. Hopefully that will change soon.

  • Check out the Dizzy Pig site.

    The recipe is on there.

Also, pick up some of the products if you do not already have them. They are really good.

  • Well, congrats on the new addition.

I am hoping to warm up my wife by EGGtoberfest time.

BTW, did you get it at your local BGE supplier? Did you get a good deal?

I am trying to figure how much to budget for a small. I would like to save up for it.

  • Got the crab meat of the local Fresh Market.

The cooking surface is a thin disposable grilling sheet that I bought at Lowe's, I think. I folded it in half and bent up the edges so it would fit on the small. Sprayed with Pam before putting it on the egg.

It's important to let the crab cakes refrigerate an hour or two after forming the patties or else they try to fall apart on you.

    Here's the recipe:

Give 'em a try! They're awesome.

  • I bought here in Nashville from the nearest dealer, The Hearth and Grill Shop. They're a pretty nice bunch. They had an after Christmas sale, and it was maybe 10% off. Honestly, I don't remember exactly how much I paid, and I don't have my Amex bill immediately available.

By the look of your avatar, you have plenty of things to be spending your money on! The good Lord hasn't given us any kids yet, but I hope we're not too far behind you.

Man - I gotta try these! I love making crab cakes per a recipe that is alledgedly Brennan's of New Orleans. I love DP rubs and Tsunami Spin in particular so I'll give this one a go. I like the idea of not frying them in oil.

My problem with crab cakes is the cost for us landlocked fellas. The other day I was at Whole Foods with my 14 yr old daughter, and she commented on buying lump crab meat. I had to point out to her the $29.95 a pound price  Oh well - maybe for special occasions.

  • The crab meat is steep. Try buying backfin if you can get it, as it is a bit less expensive.

  • For me, I have grilled crab cakes (before my EGG) on a gasser using the Weber's recipe and they were really good.

I bought this crab meat at Kroger in a plastic container near the seafood. I believe that the most expensive was the claw meat at around $7, if I am not mistaken.
