replacing gasket/seal

Would love some advice on how to best replace my gasket. The instructions I got in the package when I bought the replacement from my local Egg dealer are as follows:
*Remove the old gasket with a flat-edeged scraper or box cutter
*Clean the rim of the base and lid with acetone (preferred)or rubbing alcohol and let dry for at least 30 minutes. The surface must be totally clean for the new gasket to adhere.
*The new gasket is self-adhesive but you can use a spray adhesive (Super 77 by 3M) to ensure a good seal. If using the spray adhesive, spray a small amount around the rim of the base and the lid. Allow this to set for about 2 minutes to become tacky.
*Remove backing from the gasket and press firmly down onto the rim. Bend the gasket around the rim as you press down. Do not stretch the gasket; there is ample material for the top and bottom rim of your Big Green Egg.
*Allow adhesive to cure for 24 hours with the lid closed before using your EGG.
*If your gasket should loosen, you can glue it back on with Elmer's glue or other household adhesive.[p]Now for most, this would seem to be suficient information, but I tend to be a little overly obsessive (ok anal) when it comes to the maintenance and care of my be-loved EGG. Any additonal tips or information would be greatly appreciated, as I need to get this operation completed, so I can continue cooking wonderful Eggsperiments! Thank You all~ CindyLouWho?

    Cindy Roper,
I'm sure I'm just like others who would like to help you, but don't quite understand what you're not following.

    Cindy Roper,
i think the directions say it all.[p]don't know what's missing. but here's a tongue in cheek expansion on the directions if you really need more.[p]*Get into car, go to hardware store, purchase acetone and scraper.
*When you get home, go to where the egg is
*approach egg, with handle facing you, while holding scraper. put the acetone down.
    *open the lid
*Remove the old gasket with a flat-edged scraper or box cutter
*throw old gasket into the trash
*put down the scraper, pick up the acetone, open the acetone
*Using a rag which I should have told you to get at the hardware store but didn't (if you didn't get one, drop everything and go back to the hardware store to get it. I'll wait...), wet the rag with acetone and apply it to the gummy residue (if any).
*wipe the goo away, using more acetone and a new portion of the rag as required.
*open the package the gasket came in (this critical step is missing from the manufacturer's instructions, unbelievably).
*Remove backing from the gasket and press firmly down onto the rim. Bend the gasket around the rim as you press down. Do not stretch the gasket; there is ample material for the top and bottom rim of your Big Green Egg.
    *Do the second rim.
*Allow adhesive to cure for 24 hours with the lid closed before using your EGG.
*If your gasket should loosen, you can glue it back on with Elmer's glue or other household adhesive.

  • Geez, thanks for not being condescending at all.

  • Don't want to carve ceramic off my rim with a box cutter, is there a better way?

clou, trust me...you will NOT carve any ceramic off with a box cutter! That space age fired ceramic will dull the cheap steel used to make box cutters. Any other questions? If you wish send me email.

    Hey Cindy,
This is the way I do it :[p]Loosen the band on the top and remove the dome. Let the band open up, as in the lid open position, so you can have better access to the bottom gasket. Scrape the bottom gasket off with a putty knife or wood chisel. Clean as well as you can with alcohol (denatured, or rubbing) and remove as much as the old adhesive as you can by scraping and rubbing with the chisel and paper towels. Place the lid on the base in the inverted position and repeat the above instructions for removing the base gasket. Cut the new (replacement) gasket in two equal halves and apply one half to the lid, remove the lid and set aside. Apply the other half of the gasket to the base. Put the top band in the closed position at this point being very careful to apply the pressure on the hinge only and NOT on the band itself else it may bend. Put the lid in place, adjust the bands as you did in the original assembly, and tighten the band bolts. Don't cook on it for 24 hours minimum and you're good to go......

    CindyLou,
    um[p]aw you.
loosen up and welcome to the family. tongue in cheek around here actually means "tongue in cheek"
    that wasn't condescending.
if you want condescending, wait 'til celtic wolf chimes in.[p]anyway. if you don't take us too seriously, we won't do the same.
    cheers!
