While on vacation in Napa Valley a few weeks ago, I saw "grilled artichoke" on the appetizer menu at a restaurant. We ordered one to try and I was absolutely blow away by how good it was.
Yesterday while shopping at Whole Foods Market, I picked up two large beautiful artichokes. Today while watching the my N.O. Saints football team get beat by the winless Rams, I decided to give it a try grilling the artichokes.
I melted a stick of butter in garlic.
We trimmed the artichokes by clipping the tips of each leaf with a scissors. Then steamed them in a steamer pot for about 30 min. We cut them in half and removed the hairs/choke. Sprinkled salt and pepper and drizzled with a little olive oil and some garlic melted butter.
I had the Big Green Egg ready and heated to 375* direct with a raised grid. Placed the halved artichokes cut side down right on the grill, closed the dome and cooked for 7 minutes (checking halfway). Then I flipped the artichokes and poured the rest of the garlic butter on top of each one and cooked for another 1 to 2 minutes watching closely not to burn (because of the butter dripping).
They came out unbelievable, better then I expected maybe even better then the restaurant (according to my wife).
Bottom line I found a winner. Worth trying for certain.

Tiger Tony,[p]Those look and sound great. Have had fire roasted baby artichokes at the Hitching Post in Buellton, CA that are a must have on every visit. These sound similar.

fluffyb2,
The place we had these was Rutherford Grill in Napa. I've never heard of grilled artichokes before until I tasted these.

Tiger Tony,[p]I'm curious. Do they come tender enough to eat part of the leaves or do you still do the "between the teeth" deal?[p]mShark
-
mollyshark,
They were very tender, but you do do the "scrape the leaf on your front teeth" routine. With me there ain't much left when I get finished. The heart and stem are the best part.[p]
