Question about temperature control
David
Posts: 97
My wife and I just bought a large egg yesterday. We haven't even cooked on it yet because we're waitng for some accessories to arrive, like the daisy wheel, V-rack, and such. But I went out and lit it up a while ago, just to get the feel of how quickly I could adjust the temperature with the dampers. I was amazed with the speed of it. But I'm curious about one thing. When you want to adjust the temperature only slightly, say from 350* down to 275*, are you more likely to adjust the top one or the bottom? Or vise-versa? Any input on this would be greatly appreciated. As an aside, I just want to tell everyone about how much information I learned just from reading your posts the last couple of days.

David,
Use the bottom vent to control the dome temp. You can use the top vent to tweak it.

David,
If you allow the temp to stay at 350° for to long, you will have a harder time (longer time) to get it back down to 275°, be sure your not seeing the temp from the firestarter still burning..with the firestarter on top of the lump, if you close the dome very soon after lighting, you will be reading the temp of the burning starter..if you watched the dome temp it would rise to somewhere in the 300° range and once the starter has burnt out the dome temp will drop back down to the low 200° range..as the lump begins to burn..let it rise to within 25-50° of your desired cooking temp and then start to adjust....hope this doesnt add confusion...but I know I personally made this rookie mistake on my first couple of cooks....[p]
