Winter is comming.......

I just got a BGE this summer, and it has been fabulous. I have read it performs well in freezing outdoor temps, but was just wondering if there are any special tricks of the trade I should be aware of when using the Egg in the dead of the winter...Thanks

CanuckEgg,
put it close to the door : ) if it freezes shut its good to light some lump in there or get a drop light and hang it inside to get it warm enough that the ice melts, this has never happened to me, but ive seen it happen to others. other than that i use it all year thru all temps

CanuckEgg,
Make sure to always leave or even add lump to it when you are done cooking...when it freezes shut, and it will, you will have enough fuel in it to drop a starter cube in the top or bottom vent and get it lit to thaw it out. The drop light works also as was mentioned.[p]Wess

CanuckEgg,[p]Don't lick dome or any metal parts when it's this cold out. Heheee.[p]Seriously, about the only thing I do different when the temps are around 0°F are start a smaller fire and allow more time for it co come up to temp and I bring my plate setter inside for a few hours to warm up so I don't temp shock it. CanuckEgg,
Turn the egg so your bottom draft away from the prevailing winds.Stock up on your lump now.Have fun all winter long.

• CanuckEgg,
The one thing I do if it is snowing out when using the Egg is take some foil and make a tent over the daisy wheel to keep the snow out and prevent dripping on the food cooking. [p]Other than that I might slide on some Uggs to run outside instead of flip flops like I do in the summer. [p]HTH

CanuckEgg,[p]The only problem I've had is freezing shut, and of those times, the worst was when the gaskets got wet, and partially froze together. I heard this tearing sound as I lifted the dome, and, fortunately, realized what was happening.[p]So I try and remember to cover them. Just cheap contractor size black trash bags work O.K. The additional advantage is that the ceramic seems to absorb somewhat less moisture, and so the Egg comes up to heat a little more quickly. I didn't have a cover on before starting the Christmas turkey, and it took 2+ hours to reach 350 dome. With cover, the start is just a little longer than in the warm weather.[p]gdenby
• Yes, but then I would have to live in Texas...

EarM,
...but i thought it was a 'dry' heat?

• stike,
It is, until the sweat starts pouring off your butt.

• EarlM,
Did I meet you in Omaha? [p]Mike

• Car Wash Mike,
I doubt it. I lived in Omaha (actually Papillion, NE) in the 70's (did I just give away my age?). I was stationed at Offutt AFB for a few years, then went back with General Dynamics for a couple. Been back a couple of times, but not for at least 10 years now. I know, too much information.

• EarM,[p] Did I say degrees? I meant humidity..[p]

• CanuckEgg,
I for one and I presume morro bay rich are trying to figure out what you folks are talking about. what is winter?

CanuckEgg,
one more tip... always wear welding gloves to hold yer beer so yer hand doesn't warm it. it's 14 degrees f in that photo... cheers!

• stike,
So is my oven, but I wouldn't want to live there.

• SpokaneMan,
Been to Spokane many times in Winter and Summer, I'll take Austin. The women wear a lot fewer clothes year round.

• eggerave,[p]Agreed on the clothes. The problem is that I remember Austin being a bit on the granola side. Having lived in Seattle for 19 years around many granola type women, it would seem best if they covered up as much as possible.

• SpokaneMan,
You forgot about the University of Texas. Spokane is a beautiful area but man it gets COLD and the wind blows. Not too much granola either. Here's to BGE's and the friends you make!

Rick's Tropical Delight,
Talking about ice cold. I'm looking forward to winter. I'm partial to the temp my root beer and Coke gets sitting out in the garage. :>)[p]You know I thought that was a Piqua thing to have recliners in front of the garage? LOL[p]H

• SpokaneMan,
Careful Spokaneman, you may damage a fragile hippie chix Karma and just remember all these granolas still over here in King County run the state every November when they vote...mmmm, maybe That Texas thing looks better now...Honey, pack up the kids as soon as I get off my soapbox....[p]Whack[p]P.S. The preceding was not intended to further promote an un-PC holistic environment. All fragile hippie chix please disregard (and please stop raising my taxes)

• dhuffjr,
this is my favorite time of year... from right now till thanksgiving.[p]you need to bring the kids out to the corn maze and we'll throw some stuff in the eggs![p]the recliner is usually in the garage! i put it in the driveway just for the photo. this is south drexel ya know! heheh[p]hey, that pulled pork from last saturday... my friend sold the rest of it at his carryout and it was a complete sell out and people commented that it was so moist and full of flavor!

Rick's Tropical Delight,
Wooooooooooo hoooooooooo Drexel.....every metro area has one! LOL[p]A friends wife was raised there. I always harass her and say you can get the girl out of Drexel but not the Drexel out of the girl LOL[p]H

• I actually love Austin. We've also spent a lot of time in San Antonio. I insist on making a pilgrimage to Lockhart whenever we're down there. Last time, I made my wife skip her nephew's wedding rehearsal to get over there. [p]Except for the stifling humidity, I would move to either place in a second. I know Austin has less humidity, but it's still a lot more than Spokane.

• Whack Masterson,[p]Oh, I know they're still raising my taxes. At least over here, I don't have to see the cause of my frustration every time I walk out the door. [p]Also, I know I'll be paying for that viaduct, but I'll wish you good luck living with that looming fiasco. I'll enjoy my 5 minute commute in the sunshine!
• SpokaneMan,[p]On the plus side for you , you get to actually own and build on 100% on your side of the pass, I get a whopping 35% with the CAO. I am in the process of building my 3rd house for a client in Ellensburg and except for the durned wind, I would move over there in a heartbeat. The money in construction is great over here, but like you mentioned, at what cost to the sanity? Between Light rail, the via-doggle and potential tolls on I-90 and potential fees to even enter Seattle, The Olympians and the Seattle/Kings in the Gooberment sure make it tough to wanna stay in the state, let alone this area. Maybe sooner than later we will be neighbors on the "right" side of the state.[p]Whack
