Advice on placement of the butt

Unknown
edited November -0001 in EggHead Forum
I'm confused about whether to place the butt directly on the grate or have it raised somehow to avoid the one side being burnt to a crisp.[p]Also, do most of you use indirect cooking for an overnight smoke etc?[p]Thanks for any help.

Morning Harris Buck:[p]Indirect is definitely the way to go with butts. The direct heat even at a low temp of 200 - 250 would probably not be good on one side.[p]Here is a pic of the four butts I put on last night at 11:15am, pic taken at about 8:30am this morning (9 hours in).[p]P9030013.jpg [p]Have a GREAT day!

  • Thanks for the advice. I have a question about your drip pan.....do you actually have 3 layers of grid in that pic? Are you placing your drip pan on a grid by itself just above the coal?[p]Thanks.....this is new to me.

Morning Harris Buck:[p]The drip pan is setting on the platesetter, feet up, with the main grid on the feet and then the grid extender on that grid.[p]This pic may show it a little better.
