Pork Butt....Little Help

I put on two Pork Butts two hours ago. I thought I put in enough hickory wood but I may have burned most of it off pre-cook. My setup is stable and I don't want to mess with it to add more wood. I was wondering if anyone has had success just opening the bottom vent and throwing in a couple of chunks of wood and smoking that way? Or should I just not worry about it.

    ncegger,
i would leave it alone you are proabably wanting to "SEE" smoke.. welll if you see smoke it usually tastes bad... all you need to see is a little blue smoke and just little wiffs of it.. [p]OTOH if that's not what you were wanting to know yes it is pretty easy to add wood pick up your grid with the BGE lifting mechanism

like this and set it over giggerly to the side add wood replace and close up...[p]but if it were me i would not worry about it[p]

Hey BENTE,[p]You are right as rain about not seeing smoke.....but in this case adding wood would be more involved than just moving your grate aside. Wouldn't he be using an indirect type of set-up for barbecuing a butt? Plate setter, dripper, grate & butt. That is a lot of hardware to move when hot.[p]~thirdeye~

BENTE,[p]First, thank you for your response. I agree it's probably best left alone. However, I guess I wasn't clear in my question. I don't want to mess with the grid/food/grill setup. I was wondering if i could open the bottom vent and throw in wood and the close it. Would that work?

    ncegger,
proabably not. it would proabably hinder you more in the air flow department, than it would anything else. you may not even catch the wood on fire. i have had butts on and filled the bottom with grease. but that is what happens when you don't use a drip pan.[p]
    i would leave it IMO[p]
