Plate Setter vs. Pizza Stone ?

Just bought my first BGE. It's an XL. The salesman said that I could use the top of the plate setter as a baking surface and would not need a pizza stone in addition to the plate setter. Some of the posts I have seen suggest differently. I haven't bought either yet, but I am ready to buy one or the other, or both. Thanks in advance for any advice.

  • Colin,[p]You will need to hear back from some XL users...[p]However, the setter (important accessory) when used gets real dirty especiallt if one doesn't use drip pans.[p]I wouldn't want to take the time to clean and then use as a pizza stone.[p]Also, I wouldn't want to use the pizza stone for a setter, same reason.[p]Kent
  • Colin,[p]I have a Medium.[p]Suggestion -- Set up plate setter[p]Place the pizza stone above the plate setter [ceramic grid], just enough to have air circulate between the pizza stone and the plate setter.[p]Bake away![p]
  • Colin,[p]I have always used a pizza stone (SWMBO's pampered chef stone or one we got from her aunt) directly on my plate setter and have had no problems.[p]As someone else mentioned, my plate setter is pretty dirty from 4 years of indirect cooks-[p]Good luck!
  • Colin, I have both and before I bought a pizza stone I
    used the plate setter for my first pizzas just like the salesman told me also and it worked just fine. of course I wanted to be like everyone else and own a pizza stone so I purchased one. It is a little easer to maintain and keep clean. but as for as I am concerned the plate setter is all you need to cook a great pizza.

    Thanks to all. I'm going to go ahead and buy both. I could probably get by for a while with the plate setter, but I know that, sooner or later, I would want a pizza baking stone. So I'll just get them now and be done with it. Thanks again for the responses.[p]Colin
