luis,
T. sugar won't burn like the typical white sugar at grilling temps. Use it in all your rubs, etc.......

luis,
turbinado is better for bbq, i also use it sometimes in cofee, and it works just as good as the red hummingbird juice in the feeder. it doesnt burn as quickly as the white stuff

luis,

look for this box on your grocery shelf and while there also pick up a box of Kosher salt - you're also be seeing recipes calling for it.

luis,
hate to always be the guy peeing on campfires....[p]turbinado ("sugar in the raw") is NOT raw sugar. it is as close as you can get to white refined table sugar as any other retail product out there. refined white sugar is 100 sucrose. turbinado is 99% sucrose.[p]white sugar is made from taking turbinado (it is not 'raw' at all) and steaming it or washing it to remove the last traces of molasses. it essentially adds only color. [p]the real perversion in this is that most of brands of turbinado sugar we buy isn't taken out of the process just before it would have been washed (to become refined table sugar). what's actually done now is that white table sugar has enough molasses added BACK into it to be marketed as turbinado.[p]that said, i like it for looks and i like the size. like kosher salt, it's a larger grain, better for handling in BBQ i think. contrary to backyard legend, it doesn't have any different melting or burning characteristics than plain old white refined sugar. there is no claim made by the manufacturers to that effect. remember, it is as close to white sucrose table sugar as you can get. there are no magic health benefits, minerals, vitamins, etc. in any amount that make any difference. if you can taste a difference, you are a god among men.[p]...it started showing up on shelves when earth shoes, macrame', and the mother earth news were popular. part of the movement toward "natural" foods. [p]i use it myself, but i know i'm getting conned. you should know too.

luis,
Turbinado sugar is raw sugar that has been refined to a light tan color by washing in a centrifuge under sanitary conditions. Surface molasses is removed in the washing process. In total sugar content turbinado is closer to refined sugar than to raw sugar. [p]Raw sugar is a tan to brown, coarse granulated solid obtained on evaporation of clarified sugar cane juice. Raw sugar is processed from the cane at a sugar mill and then shipped to a refinery. It is about 98% sucrose. Raw sugar is not sold to consumers. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration notes raw sugar is "unfit for direct use as food or as a food ingredient because of the impurities it ordinarily contains."

Celtic Wolf,
i should save these frigging posts so i don't have to retype every time.[p]i don't like getting a rep for campfire peeing, but there are so many of these myths that will not die. [p]human nature.... [p]

stike,
Now if you could only do something about the "Moon Landing" myth![p]That's been driving me nuts for years.[p]Thanks!

BurntRaw,
not long ago i was at the Air and Space Museum, where you can see the actual fake rocks from the soundstage where they faked the moon landing. Pretty impressive.

stike,
sugar in the raw turbinado is made before the sugar is bleached out unlike others where molasses is added back in, it does taste different in your coffee. now i wouldnt say its better for you.
from their site ;[p]Sugar In The Raw's distinctive color and taste comes from the sugar cane juice flavor that naturally occurs in the crystals. By contrast, white sugar is obtained by refining the sugar cane crystals to remove all the sugar cane juice flavor (and with that, all of the nutrients). Thus white sugar is basically 100% sucrose whereas Sugar In The Raw contains very small amounts of nutrients. Some nutritionists believe that these very small amounts of nutrients contribute to the advantages Sugar In The Raw over refined white sugar. Some commercial brown sugars are made by adding coloring and flavor back to refined white sugar; this is not the case with Sugar In The Raw.

fishlessman,
"very small amounts"[p]dude... it's table sugar that's a little brown. hahaha[p]show me where they tell you about how it melts at higher temps.[p]and how did you know i put it in my coffee? you been stalking me again?

stike,

its odd that right now i have a sugar mixing vessel in the shop from an old sugar refinery. its being retrofitted for the pharmecuetical industry. i bet in a few years all the sugar will be coming from overseas as most products are. it wont take long for the drug companies to move either, if you ever been in a pharmecuetical drug plant you would see that it isnt much different than baking a cake. i wonder what we will be turning the pharmecuetical tank into next or will they just ship it out of the country.
