edited November -1 in EggHead Forum
i have been using the old king of charcoal smoker with water in between meat and coals
really enoying my new bge but am missing the heavier smoke flavor
that we are used to from many years of using charcoal .My question is
can i throw a few charcoal briquettes in the firebox with my lump
to get some heavier charcoal flavor along with hickory chips which
we use
thanks again

    topper,
You can certainly add a few briquettes if that gives you the results you want. Have you tried using wood chunks? I've smoked things that were close to inedible due to too many wood chunks. Fortunately, I'll eat anything.....[p]TNW

  • I have cooking on the BGE XL for more than 20 years and I use large lump mixed with standard lump for low and slow.  Lately I’ve read articles where cooks use storage bins to store charcoal which allows them to select a good portion of the charcoal and place in smoker. I’ve always just poured out of the bag (usually disposing about an eighth of of dust and small chunks in the bottom).   Stupid question, does the storage bins help in anyway to store and select charcoal?

Just dump it in out of the bag.  It all burns the same......the dust too.

The problem with the storage containers is that while you're keeping rain out, you're also sealing the moisture in.

It does that when someone revives/posts on some of those very old threads. Nobody knows why.

Imagine if @jonessteave decided to have an opinion on this. It may get stuck and never make it back out!
