Best Meat Thermometer

Unknown
edited November -0001 in EggHead Forum
I have been using the standard 14$ meat thermometer and have had some issues with it. Are there any thermometers that work well without taking the meat off of the grill?? I am not in the market to spend serious scratch, but am willing to take the plunge. Advice??

    SDEGGMAN,
most of us use the maverick et 73 for lower temp cooks, and a thermapen for checking things toward the end of a cook. the cheapest way is to get a roasting thermometer to stick verticly in the roast or butt in the top which can be read thru the daisy without opening the egg, but once you get the wireless you wont do that any more.

    SDEGGMAN,
sure there are many brands out there with probes in the meat with the unit on the outside. Most times they are at or under $20. Wireless ones start more around $35 to $40 though you can catch an occassional sale. OTOH perhaps if you tell us what "serious scratch" means to you we can help you better.

SDEGGMAN,[p]I use a dual probe Polder that gives me grate temp and meat temp. I've used one for years and always been happy. Sounds like most of the folks around the parts have graduated to more advanced solutions. Anyway, you should be able to find the dual probe Polder for $25 or so at Bed, Bath, and Beyond or Linens and Things. If you wait until you get one of their coupons in the mail (we get at least one a week) you can save a few more bucks.[p]Matt

I like the ol' Taylor metal "Stick-n-Stay" which costs about $10 - $12....I stick it in the meat and leave it in there for the entire cook....If it's a larger piece of meat I can stick it in the top and just lift the daisy wheel off for a few seconds to get a reading.....Every few months I'll stick my digital thermometer in just to see how well the Taylor is doing and it's right on the money every time....That Taylor has been good to me.......[p]Ed McLean...eddiemac

  • fishlessman, Does the maverick alert you (like wake you up) if the temp drops below a certain, set point?[p]Thanks, Rascal

    Rascal,
it has a low alarm, high alarm, meat alarm and a timer. it has all the features needed. those are the good things. the bad would be that the on off switches are too dainty for a bbq unit, and the logic to set it up is a little off for a drinker at midnight to set up, but mines lasted a couple years since i had the origional replaced for broken switches. it really could be made better, but i have not seen a better unit yet for the price. the unit will wake you, but i check on things every 3-4 hours during an overnite cook anyways.
