Does it matter if one uses a cast iron dutch oven, vs. some sort of oven-safe casserole when doing something like baked beans in the egg?[p]TNW

The Naked Whiz, I believe cast iron is the way to go when working with direct fire..
BTW..in my local weekly adds journal last week..a 36 inch wide cast iron kettle for sale for 35 bucks.
Worth about 6 times that at auctions here. I missed it again.

The Naked Whiz,
Most oven-safe cookware is not safe when exposed to open flame. I put a fire brick under mine.

The Naked Whiz,
I have a ScanPan 2000 8 quart Dutch oven; I set it on a couple of firebricks. Works for me.

Char-Woody, I hope your wife can't pick something that size up, If she can you better behave yourself, It could do some real damage. Maybe a good thing you did miss it.
Kidding of course.[p]Painter

The Naked Whiz,
Just wanted to throw this into the pot.
As others have mentioned there are other things that will work for you other than cast iron....BUT...
Once you get a cast iron dutch oven, and get it nicely seasoned, you will always wonder why you did not have one sooner! That goes for frying pans for the kitchen too!

WessB, Sams had a starter set, including the oven, earlier this summer at a real decent price.
-
BlueSmoke,
The egg does a righteous job of seasoning them too!

The Naked Whiz,
I've had a Lodge dutch oven (with legs) for years and have used it in the house (in my Rumford fireplace on a crane and in the coals) and on my outdoor wood fireplace. Now I have the egg and plan to use it there. If you are interested in cooking, I'd definitely consider the cast iron dutch oven for its versatility alone. Not that expensive for a great piece of cookware that will outlast me!

Char-Woody,
You're right, you could get a pretty large "friar" in that 36 incher.
