help a newbie - part fell off

Unknown
edited November -0001 in EggHead Forum
We just purchased a Big Green Egg yesterday. But when opening the lid to fill the BGE with characol, the dual function metal top fell off and broke. Is that normal, or is there a specific way it is to be connected to the lid? Could we get the metal top replaced?[p]If our qq's could be answered, it'd be so appreciated![p]:( We were so looking forward to a BGE meal tonight!

Jen,[p]Not sure about replacement policy, but put some aluminum foil over the top, heavy duty or double layer and poke 4 or 5 pencil size holes and control the air flow from the bottom. Shame not to have BGE food tonight.

    Jen,
Wow - that's kind of surprising. I have heard of the green ceramic rain cap falling off, but not the daisy wheel top. You can still cook - if you have the rain cap use it to control air flow out of the top, but you will have to remove and reset it to open the egg because it WILL fall off. You can even use a brick or something else that will not melt due to the heat. If the brick has holes wrap it in tin foil. As for replacement, you can certainly buy a top, not sure if it something they would warranty or not.[p]Good Luck and go ahead and cook.

  • Thank you guys! We are going ahead and try your suggestions - and cook. :) [p]I just wanted to clarify - the daisy top should not fall off? Is it possible that it was connect incorrectly by us - that should teach us to put the beer down when putting together stuff. ;)[p]Thanks again!

  • Jen,

    Jen,
yours is the first story i've heard in which the metal daisy wheel top falls off the egg and breaks. that just isn't a typical occurrence. the daisy top wasn't designed to be permanently fixed to the egg. [p]you might look at the following link for placement of the daisy wheel on the egg.[p]at least you can keep on eggin. welcome and good luck.[p]mark

  • Jen,
You mean the cast-iron daisy wheel BROKE? Did it fall into the sun or something? Seriously, I'm sure the BGE folks will give you a replacement, but the suggestions given here will tide you over?

  • I'm a newbie too and... the daisy top is not supposed to be attached right? It just sits up there?[p]thanks.
  • Wow - first of all, thanks for your help and speedy responses. [p]I had my husband clarify as to what happened - he said when opening the lid, he didn't expect the daisy top lid to swing open, and apparently, gravational forces won. :)[p]So the tiny lid on top is broken in some areas - yet, we're still grilling away. I think we - and the steaks - will be okay. :)[p]Jenna
  • Paul N,
Correct. It just sits on top. I don't even put it on until my coals are well-lit. Remember that once you get your temp set, you need to align the screws so that it doesn't slip into a new position when you open the lid. Rotate the whole unit (using gloves) until the pivot screw is dead center front and the rotator screw is directly in line with it toward the back. If that doesn't make sense, ping The Naked Whiz for a link.

Sure it's covered under warranty. You unpacked the egg and you found a broken part. Ask for a replacement.

    Jen,
The small screw for the slider on the daisy wheel should be set so it is directly center with the dome handle, this way you can open the lid with out it falling off.

    Hank,
Dang, I did not know this! We always carefully remove the daisy whenever we open the lid so as not to mess up our perfectly dialed in temp. Dang, I gotta go out and look now to find these screws.[p]Two years of this nonsense - why did no one here tell me about this???[p]Gwen

  • dimplesmom,
As I said, the Naked Whiz has a tutorial on this. I think someone posted a link.

dimplesmom,[p] Actually it has been mentioned several times. I seem to remember if have a discussion with Stike whether the screw was at 6 o'clock or 12 o'clock.
  • dimplesmom,
My earlier instructions were a little weird. The idea is to think of the daisy wheel top as a pendulum if it were held at 90 degrees. When the dome is lifted, the wheel will rotate around the pivot screw so that the wheel part will seek its lowest point. You simply want to keep both screws in a straight line toward the back of the egg, not as I said in an earlier post, front dead center. Damn...this is hard to explain!![p]Of course, my daisy wheel is a bit gummy, so it stays where I set it regardless!

    Hank,
Okay, I went out and looked and my daisy wheel doesn't have any screws like that or anything that will keep it from moving if you leave it on when the lid is lifted. We used the egg last night and I inspected that darn daisy every time I took it off and there is nothing like that on there. More than one kind of daisy out there?[p]Gwen[p]

dimplesmom,[p] If you have a daisy wheel you have screws. The screws in question are what allow the daisy to turn and the slider to slide.[p] They don't actually fasten the DFMT to the Egg.

dimplesmom,[p]My large has a screw in the middle that allows the ring with 5 oval holes to rotate for air flow--about 6 years old. [p]The small has a screw in the middle that allows the same thing and then has a second screw about 2 o'clock position relative to the lettering on the top and that allows the entire center disc to rotate. [p]I try to place the top on the egg so that the second screw is at the 6 o'clock position -closest to the front of the egg so when the top is lifted the swinging weight is hanging by the screw.
