Transporting my Egg

Unknown
edited November -0001 in EggHead Forum
My husband and I are planning to enter a bbq competition. We have a large Egg in a wood cart. The competition is a few hours away at a campground. I am trying to figure out the safest way to get our Egg to the competition without it breaking?[p]

    PK,
Transporting a large isn't easy and can be disasterous as evidenced by tjv's post a few days ago:[p]SandbaggersBrokenEgg.jpg[p]With such short notice and very little time to prepare I think I would set the large in a cardboard box and place in the back seat of your auto, secure it with a seatbelts and take it really easy.[p]Good luck.[p]Spring "Got A Small For Traveling" Chicken

  • PK,
When I transported my XL and Medium from Detroit to St Louis I took a sheet of 1 inch thick 4' x 8' foam insulation I got at Home Depot and made buffers. I put a piece under the eggs. I did the same thing with all the parts inside the egg. I also opened the lids and put a piece between the top and bottom. I worked perfectly. You can cut all the pieces to custom fit and keep for all of your competitions.

PK,[p]if it rides inside with you, put a trashbag around it, gather up the top and stick the top down into the top vent, put the cap on. see the pic (although that's a small in the pic). the trashbag keeps the smell out of your car, ash, dirt, etc.[p]if it rides in the bed of a pickup, with no cushion under it, remember, ceramic-to-ceramic contact is bad over bumps.[p]i'd take out the guts and secure the empty egg so it can travel without moving around.[p]then, put the guts back in, but take a few sections of yesterday's paper and put them between the internal components. a thick section (you know, like 10-12 pages) each under the firebox and up between it and the sidewalls. another section over the rim of the firebox and up the walls, then drop the fire ring on that.[p]i'd also tie the handle shut so the lid won't hop.[p]if you want... another way is to take the top dome off. take out the guts. put the large egg in a rear seat and belt it in. put the guts back in and the dome on upside down into the lower dome, with an old blanket keeping the two from touching. the seat cushion will be enough to keep the egg from hopping and breaking, so no need for the newspaper trick. if it fits, you could even put it in a back seat without taking the dome off. i think flashback bob got his home that way.

    PK,
I took my large and small to a competition about 3 hours away. I put the them both in the back of my truck and took the insides out of them and left the ceramic top and daisy wheel off of them. Next time I would do a cart to easy putting in and out.[p]One thing I did not plan for was the end of the comp when we packed to go home. The eggs were still hot. I used oven mits to get what remaining charcoal out then I took the insides out. My advice would be to plan the same or sit around long enough so it is not hot.[p]They did not have a problem in the back of my truck. I have seen the BGE dealer here drive around with a large in the back of his but in a table.

    tjv,
I think that picture should be posted at least once each day to remind folks that even in the hands of a wizard, bad stuff can happen, especially when going from point A to point B with an Egg. You may be crying but you probably saved many others from suffering the same fate.[p]Perhaps you can use your wizardry to come up with the perfect transporter. Here's my idea of the perfect transporter:[p]2004Revolution.jpg[p]The Coop is calling.[p]Spring "This Side Up" Chicken

PK,
i made this for mine, i had it empty for the ride. the ones made from plywood and 2x4's do the same thing, you need to make sure the egg and lid are tied down. no matter what you do there is some risk with transporting ceramic, if you have a pickup or trailer maybe you could get the whole table in there. make sure its tied well, my setup will have more cushioning next time
