Thermometer clip placement?

Unknown
edited November -0001 in EggHead Forum
I've noticed in alot of photos that many Eggers have their thermometer clip on the outside of the egg instead of inside the dome. What's the purpose of this & how do you keep your thermometer from pulling out with this setup?
Thanks

    atx,
some put the clip on the outside to shorten the probe inside. they can be easily bent closing the dome with large pieces of meat inside. you dont want to pin it inside, sliding is better and rotating your desired dome temp to the up position will make it easier to see from a distance that the temps are off, you can see the needle pointing straight up from pretty far away. easier than trying to read it.

  • fishlessman,
Thanks, I'll have to remember that come turkey time.

    fishlessman,
If your dome thermometer is tight in the hole in the dome, rotating is a BAD idea...you will take it out of calibration every time you turn it....My large is that tight, and I am sure many others are also....FWIW I put ALL of my clips on the outside.[p]Wess

    atx,
Gravity will keep it from pulling out..unless you somehow manage to turn your egg upside down..in which case you would have "other concerns" ..LOL...w good while back the thermometers had a plastic face, many times during a high temp cook the plastic would causing the thing to leak. So we would move the thermometer away from the dome.[p]Wess

    WessB,
Let me try that one again....I was on the phone the same time I was replying...[p]Gravity will keep it from pulling out..unless you somehow manage to turn your egg upside down..in which case you would have "other concerns" ..LOL...a good while back the thermometers had a plastic face, many times during a high temp cook the plastic would warp causing the thing to leak and fill with moisture. So we would move the thermometer away from the dome with the clip or some other form of spacer avoiding any kind of warpage. It is impossible for that thermometer to fall out of that hole in ANY normal situation.....and what Fishlessman said about being able to pull it out if you had a large piece of meat in there is just all the more reason to have the clip on the outside....I dont advise rotating the thermometer for calibration reasons, described in my reply to the other post.[p]Wess[p]

    WessB,
been so long since i used a bge therm i forgot about that, my teltrus dont uncalibrate by turning them, i also use the short 2.5 inch model and add 10 to 15 percent to the reading per the naked whizs findings with that particilar model. i bent all the longer stemmed gages ive owned over time.

My BGE thermo died so I have the Tel-Tru that has the 5" probe...I will sometimes use the clip on the outside if I am doing something large so that I won't bend my thermo...

    <p />icemncmth,
I use the 5" ones on all my eggs and don't find the extra 1" over that of the BGE troublesome at all - of course I also use a wooden wheel spacer most times to keep the metal back off of the hot surface. I for one have always thrown away those clips as I want to be able to remove my thermometers after I cook.
