gasket leaks, I don't see a problem

After 7 years with my egg the gasket on the back side came loose and flops over the side about 3 inches leaving a gap. But I'm able to keep the egg at temps as low as 200. I bought a new gasket from BGE and haven't put it on yet. Other then some smoke leaching from where the gasket flops over I can't think of a reason to change the gasket. Am I not understanding something?
