From a weber to a green egg "what size"

Unknown
edited November -0001 in EggHead Forum
Just got rid of my last Weber, and looking to go to the green egg grill just about everything we eat, but the problem is it is just the wife and my self. Do I get the large first and then the small, or should I start of with the the small. I will have both at some time, but need something now as I am having withdraw systems from not grilling. Any in put would be helpful. [p]Texan in Mississippi

    hiloboy,
Get the large first. Then you can do slabs of ribs, large pizzas, and have enough grid space to do several steaks, or a lot of burgers, or a couple of chickens. Since you can close the Egg and snuff the fire, you aren't wasting too much charcoal by using the larger cooker. Good luck!

    tex,
Go for the large. That way you will be able to see if you need another large or can get by with a small or medium Egg later on. Besides, you will probably start entertaining more when you get your Egg.[p]Lots of Eggheads in Mississippi. Keep your eyes and ears open for a Mississippi Eggfest. There's already been talk.[p]And as a Texan, you are certainly welcome to the Texas Eggfest coming up soon.[p]Good Egg'n to you.[p]Spring "Taking A Break From Napping" Chicken

    tex,
The XL BGE has a grid 1.5 inches larger in diameter than the 22.5 inch Weber kettle.
The large has a grid size the same as a medium Weber kettle.
The small has a grid size the same as a Weber Smokey Joe.

  • tex,
I agree with everyone else. Get the large. I have an XL, Large and Med and the large is by far the one I use most. If you only entertain on occasion the large works well and at most you might have to pre-cook a few things the day before. I have an XL because we do have parties quite a bit in the summer. Like the Whiz said you can shut down the large quickly to save charcoal and have plenty of room to cook.

  • nutcase,
Tkanks for the info,a large one it is.My main concern was about ribs, would a small one to a rack or two of ribs. Again thinks ,I read the forum everday. Good info for a new egghead Texan in Mississippi

Tex,[p] There is a technique where the ribs are rolled like a jelly roll. Doing that a small could easily do 4 racks, but get the large first..[p]

Tex - [p]First came Ms. Large. Then came Eggbert the mini. Then the BGE stork brought us Lenny the small. [p]Unless you count the dog and cats, ours is a household of two. We mostly use the small, but I would agree with what everyone else has said about getting a large for your first BGE experience. [p]Whatever you decide, you will be making a purchase you will never regret.[p]Diana

  • tex,
    without a doubt the large!
I still have some kettle grills left for when
the party gets big enough, but for sure, large
is best from the beginning :-)
    best regards

    tex,
I used Webers for around 20 years and I still have two for "backup". I have been most impressed with my large BGE. Its size most closely approximates the Webers. I generally cook for my wife and I (The dog as well when she is lucky and there are a few scraps). Jay
