Hi all,[p]I have a large egg at home, and just ordered a mini to take in our RV.[p]I didn't like the look of the mini nest, so I didn't order it. [p]Has anybody come up with a neat portable stand of some sort?[p]Thanks
Alan

Alan, about 4 years ago, we had a good guy by the name of Gregg from Hawaii (GuavaWoods) who introduced us to that famous Hawaiian smoking wood. (Wonder how Gregg is?) At that time we were joking around about using a conveted golf club hand cart..I think he really did convert one for his beach outings.
Or you can have a cabinet maker assemble a quick easy stand for it..and YB has a super good kitchen stool conversion.

Alan,
Any sturdy surface will do. Use the feet from your big egg to keep it from burning the surface below. My mini burned itself right into a wooden surface a few years ago before I figured THAT out....
All winter long my mini is on a smallish metal table right outside my back door. If I am planning to use it I set it up before it gets dark so that I can fire it up at my convenience.
For RV use I'd probably buy one of those roll-up metal camp tables.
Good luck & Have fun!

J Appledog,
You got the best stand of all. Back of a boat. I don't know if I can afford $30,000 for that kind of stand.[p]

Alan,
I picked this stand up from the Egg people, give or take a year ago. I would not give it up for the world. check to see if they still carry it.[p]Earl

Alan,
Don't know what a mini-nest is, but I did get the "table" version of the stand that BGE sells, similar to the taller one displayed in the photo from the earlier post response to your query. At my retail outlet, they wanted the same money for both....$49!!!.....but I opted for the shorter one, as in my mind, it gave me a lot more stability and eliminated it from being able to be knocked over by someone stumbling into it drunk, or whatever. I figured that the mini will serve more as a portable cooker for occasional trips or for small stuff around the house, and that a table set-up would be most practical. Occasionally I will have to test all my joints if it's not on a table, and bend down/over to tend to my cook. Oh well.

Earl,[p]That stand looks great, but I need something to collapse to fit in the all too limited compartment space in the RV. I may use the general idea though, maybe to make something similar with removeable legs, etc.[p]Thanks for the photo,
Alan[p]P.S. I'm a southerner, though, I don't do ice fishing. If I did that, I'd need the egg and a few beverages to keep from freezing. At least you get double duty out of the egg :).

• Everybody,[p]Thanks for all of the replies. I've gotten a few ideas I can use from the group. I'll post what I finally come up with in case somebody else has the same need.[p]Cheers,
Alan

• Earl,[p] Before you put the mini in the stand, do you heat it up and melt the hole in the ice with it?[p]MikeO

Alan,
Here is a picture of the stand i made for the mini,it's a folding bar stool from Wal-Mart with a flange plate bolted on top to hold mini in place.I think it would be work fine without the flange plate. The stool cost about $11.00.[p]Larry

Alan,
I use a milk crate. It barely fits, but it works nicely for carrying. I saved the original packing material and just repack it for traveling. When I cook on it, I just use the feet on the ground. I have heard that you can use a 12x12 ceramic flooring tile on the inverted milk crate with the feet. I do not remember who gave me the idea, but it came from the forum. The stand for the BGE Chiminea fits the mini perfectly and that is another option.[p]For transporting charcoal for the mini, I use a coffee can. The mini is extremely efficient when it comes to lump usage. You just do not need that much. Depending upon how much you will be cooking and how long you will gone, you can figure out how many coffee cans of lump that you will need to bring. This will save you space and contain the lump dust. I smoked a rack of ribs for four hours and the total lump used was a quarter of a coffee can.[p]Hope this helps.
