New Egg

I bought a new large egg and the damper did not come with it. It came with the black daisy wheel. I am not sure if the damper is important and if it is where can I get one. Is it ok to leave the daisy wheel on while not in use. The daisy wheel is mostly cast iron but I am worring about some parts of the wheel rusting. Had my first cook last night, did steaks. WOW, the egg lived up to all the hype.

JD,
If you're talking about the ceramic raincap, then yes, you should have gotten one. Contact your dealer ASAP.[p]The raincap provides a tighter seal than the daisy wheel. This prevents moisture and extinguishes the fire quicker.[p]You paid for it so demand it.

edbro, thats the problem. My wifes company makes them for the big green egg in Mexico and I am not sure if I can get one. She asked this morning and they said employees dont get one. I am not sure why, she just sent me a breif email. I am not sure what to do.

WHAT???? I just bought my egg two weeks ago and I got one.

jd,[p]Got my EGG in May....one came with it!

jd,
that's goofy, huh?[p]anyway, it'll go out with just the daisy (shut) and the loewr vent shut off, so you don't NEED the cap.[p]but the daisy will rust. you'll hear that it is painted sometimes, but i really don't think it is. it will rust. i left my daisy out ONCE in the rain brand new, and it started to rust. no big deal.[p]what i'd do is order one from atlanta, if you don't have a dealer. in the interim, toss the daisy inside after a cook, and crimp some tinfoil on the top to snuff it.[p]

Well, mine did not. LOL. The funny thing is I was told that it comes with one top so I bought the daisy wheel. I figured it would come with the rain cap. So now I have two daisy wheels and no rain cap. I found the rain caps online, they are about $25 plus shipping. Oh well, just glad to have an EGG!

stike,[p]Yeah, his dealer should sell him one, and it can't be ten bucks or so, I wouldn't think.
-
stike,
I wonder if anyone has seasoned their daisy like you would a cast iron pan? You think that would keep it from rusting?[p]Ed (having random thoughts) in tx

jd,[p]That does strike me as a little wierd... my dealer gave me both when I bought the egg, thus that was my understanding as to how it works. I hope you get things straightened out and possibly able to return that second wheel, with how they are built, I doubt you'll ever need to replace the first one.

Yes, I can return the daisy wheel. The problem is I did not buy it from a dealer. The company my wife works for makes the egg for big green egg. The egg was shipped from Mexico. She called and was told employees are not given the damper top. I have no idea why. I have it worked out, I have found several places to buy the rain cap. Thanks for the help!!!!!

Edintx,
well. mine's bathed in a regular fog of pig and beef fat, then stored in an oven at around 400 or so.[p]couldn't season it any better, i don't think. my cast iron pans should see such luvin.
