Indirect Grilling

edited November -0001 in EggHead Forum
I am new to using the large BGE. There are references to indirect grilling. Is there is a device to keep the coals to one side, or is there a way of doing it without an additional device? Also, I haven't been able to raise the temp above 550 degrees. The gasket seems fine and is not "leaking" smoke. Could it be the fuel? I use Barbecue Galore's lump charcoal, either mesquite or some other lump charcoal. Appreciate any help.
Thanks to all for all the tips.

  • Alamo Golfer,
Indirect applies to using a plate setter or fire stones to block direct heat. Hope this helps.

  • River Griller,[p]Where can I get or order a plate setter for my new medium BGE? I don't see them listed in BGE products![p]Thanks,[p]Stan
  • Stan,
Your BGE dealer should be able to get you a plate setter. It's the only way to go for things like ribs and pork butt. The BGE website doesn't do the best job at listing or showing the products but your dealer should know them all.

  • Yup, gotta get a platesetter....if your local dealer doesn't have one...or doesn't want to get you one ASAP...then call BGE directly...And ask them to also send you their new DVD which can be quite helpful and they'll be glad to....[p]As for not reaching higher temps...check the alignment of your firebox with the outside vent to make sure you're getting maximum airflow...Perhaps really clean out the bottom of the egg making sure the holes in the lower grid are clear for best airflow...and make sure you're using enough lump...The old BGE manual suggests a few handfuls of lump and that just ain't enough......[p]Good luck....[p]Ed McLean....eddiemac
