Removing old gasket

<p />Thanks RRP for your tip on using the paint stripper to clean up the lip edges for attaching a new gasket. Worked out great! I have new gaskets installed on my mini and large. I wonder how much mileage I can get out of these….the old one lasted over 2 years.





I took advantage of the moment to grind down three high spots on the lip edge, two on the base and one on the dome. Easy does it, just a touch here and a touch there with the grinder and I was good. Nice to have a perfect flush fit all the way around and now I have it. Perhaps BGE R&D will come up with a surface grinder to machine a perfect edge at the factory.





What’s this? Legs for the grate so it doesn’t rock and tip when I stir the coals up. It “floats” 1/8” above the firebox. [p]Clay

Now I really like the carrage bolt idea. You must be a machinest or (sorry) an engineer.

The grate legs are a really good idea. I've dumped my charcoal stirring before a cook. How long are the bolts?

That makes me think. Why doesn't BGE start casting the grate with little feet already on it? They only would need to be an inch and a half or so to keep it from tipping.

About 4". I used 6" stainless carriage bolts, cut and ground the ends then ground off the corners under the bolt heads to fit the grate holes. The grate is supported just above the firebox, barely touching. The XL egg could use this idea.

<p />ClayQ,[p]Man, I like the leg idea, consider it stolen and on my to-do list. [p]Listen, 86 that pipe notcher disc and pick yourself up a flapper type sanding disc. They come in various grits and will perform very nice finishing work. If you play with stainless and carbon steels, get one for each to avoid cross contamination of the stainless.[p]

Hold on a second ... Clay, how do you scoop the ash out if those legs extend to the bottom of the Egg?[p]~thirdeye~

Position the legs to each side of the draft opening for a clear reach.
