Soot .. Do i need to clean it ?
My egg is showing signs of soot accumulating on the interior and on the daisy wheel. Should I or how do I clean it. I rememeber when I first bought it the salesman said the egg was self cleaning!! Mine is now looking anything but clean > and in many of the photos I see other eggs look beige-y tan brown mine is black black black any thoughts ??

bob cannon,
So are mine, I call it well seasoned. -RP

bob cannon,[p]Read where taking a crumpled piece of Tin Foil and wiping down the inside works. [p]When I clean mine out, I use a shop vac and take the brush attachment and do a quick once over. I haven't done anything with the Daisy top, but read where others have placed it in the grill during cool down.[p]

bob cannon,
this is a matter of terminology - you called it soot. Soot is a dusting of ash and is easily brushed off, vaccuumed or even just wiped down. OTOH cresote is the hard ugly stuff that is as inevitable as death when it comes to a BGE. It is going to happen. If the cresote really gets heavy it will eventually get crusty and layers may flake off. When that occurrs and some falls on your food you'll find a way to deal with it. I just check from time to time and if I see any ready to pop off I take a handy putty knife and help it along.
As for posters with beige-brown interiors those are still new. What you want is shiny black and be proud of it - not ashamed of it!

bob cannon,
Do you need to clean it? No, unless it gets to the point where the stuff on the inside of the dome begins to break off and fall on your food. I use a ball of aluminum foil when it starts to look bad. As for the self cleaning claim, well... it is self sanitizing but mine's never looked white since the first cook. It has a healthy brown-black patina. I've heard that if you really crank it up and let it run for a while at nuke temps (1000 degrees or so), you can turn it white again, but I don't see the point. As for the daisy wheel, some folks scrub and oil it. I just put it inside the egg during cooldown. The heat is sufficient to keep it fairly clean.[p]Paul

Essex County, thanks I haven't reached the breakoff fall into the food stage but it was starting to show signs of hairy/fairy little fingers starting to hang. I havent had nerve enough to crank it up to 1000 degrees but will give 750 850 a shot next time out .thanks

bob cannon,
I wouldn't do the 1000 thing, you might clean the Egg but you'll probably fry the gasket. -RP
