OT...Sort of.... Pizza Peel Hypothetical Question
Lawn Ranger
Posts: 5,467
Just for the sake of conversation,...let's suppose that someone was requested to equip a pizza peel with,...oh, let's say..., uh.....a personalized handle for example. Let's also assume that the requestee has little or no knowledge of pizza peels. The question begging for an answer is......What type of pizza peel would discerning pizza peelers peel with? (Say that 5 times real fast)[p]Thanks.[p]Mike

Lawn Ranger,

You can see my webpage about how I built some peels. The only thing I would do to improve them if they were going to be sold would be to use solid wood instead of the plywood I use. The plywood works great, but isn't aesthetically as pleasing as a solid piece of wood. And of course, you could choose to make the end round instead of straight, but I was using mine to bake rolls and I wanted to get 3 rolls across the edge, so a straight edge worked better.

And, I should add, that the nice thing about how I did mine was that you can take any kind of wood you want and make the strips for the handles. I used oak, walnut, bubinga, mahogany, etc.[p]TNW

Lawn Ranger,
i like the wood peels, the more cut marks i have on it from cutting pizza on it, the better the fresh pizzas seem to slide.
i brought my wading staff to work today, going to send it to you finally, could you please send me your address one more time. i dont think anyone procrastinates more about things than me. it must be a year and a half since i first said i was sending it to you

Lawn Ranger,

well - into every life a contrarian might fall! I happen to be in the minority here but I prefer a metal peel, but then I use a purchased crust for my pizzas. Iffin your intended buyer went that route you could easily buy one of these and replace the handle with one of your fine works! BTW if anybody wonders that is a golf club handle wrap I put on mine to give a positive surefire grip.

RRP,
How far off the tee can you get the pizza?

RhumAndJerk, horizonally I got about 6 feet once - just far enough so my two Westies could claim that pizza on the deck as theirs!
That is what prompted my grip wrap. BTW I should have added to my original post that I prefer the metal for ingress and egress, but use a wood peel for cutting and serving.

The Naked Whiz,
Very nice, indeed!

The Naked Whiz,[p]The birch plywood looks pretty nice to me. Peering at the picture of it, it seems along the front edge there is a band of different color; that is, a different wood laminate. If so, you can get a kind of birch plywood available at many woodworking shops, generically called "baltic" birch, that is solid birch laminate, and dimensionally very stable. It has very little noticable banding cross grain. Might make it even prettier.[p]gdenby
