The back of my cooker is not sealing. I have heard a lot of you complain about this and tried all them that I know about with no avail.does anyone have the answer yet. I have emailed the company and have not heard back.I have loosened boalts, laid down on top of it while Tightening the boalds and made all the adjustments that I know how and don’t seem to be getting anywhere. if you know the answer please let me know.
Thanks

    okesmokie,
mine always allowed wisps of smoke out the back.[p]let me ask you, though. is it an issue?

all it will do is change your setting for 250 from what someone else's will be.[p]if your cooker is set at 350 (or any temp) and going solid for a whle, that less-than-perfect seal won't allow the temps to go up just by virtue ofm it's being there. why? well, because your settings will accommodate it.[p]if you can hold the desired temp, then there's no problem.[p]if it's a substantial gap, then it may keep you from going below 200 or something, but a slight gap doesn't keep the eg from holding temps, it just changes the settings of your lower vent and daisy from what someone else might have.

okesmokie,[p]Ya know, I don't think I've ever had one seal perfectly. It is just damn near impossible. You have this big piece of ceramic that is getting to nuke temps, then cooling, then heating, then cooling. There is just no way it is going to always return to the exact same size. I don't care if it smokes a bit around the edges. My only concern is if it cools down after I shut the vents without slowly burning out all the leftover lump. If it will do that, it can spit and complain all it wants. It's just not a hermetic seal and that's the way it is![p]mShark

    okesmokie,
The advice given below is good and sound. If this isn't creating a temperature control problem then I wouldn't worry about it. However, if it is causing you a problem like this, and you've followed all the suggestions regarding 're-seating' the dome, you may have a 'wavy' dome or base, or both. If so, post back and we can determine where you go from here, or there!!!........

  • stike,Thanks guys for the response. May be I am jumping the gun some what. I have only used the cooker 3 times and it seemed to hold the temp very well except one time it tried to go out. I haven’t seen any smoke coming out of the back but I haven’t paid that muchattention. The only thing I know I done the dollar bill test and there were no resistance on the back what so ever. Well I will fire up my new GURU tomorrow for the first time and I will watch that rascal real close. Anyway thanks again

    okesmokie,
As the others said unless you can’t hold temps don’t worry about it, but I will add this. In order to get the back to sit down flat the front has to be in it’s proper position. The metal band has to be up against the ceramic lip. If the metal band is low in the front the back will never sit right. It’s easy to overlook cause your fixated on the gap in the back. Every time I go nuclear I have to rest my bands, no big deal it takes 2 minutes. To set mine I use 2 small (3 inches) pieces of 2x4. First I loosen the band then I place them under the metal band and sitting on the bottom gasket. This can be a little tricky because obviously the band does not provide much of a lip to set the 2x4 on. Once you have done it a few times it becomes pretty easy. The 2x4’s should be at about 4 o’clock and 8 o’clock and when you have them set they will actually hold open the front of the egg with the band pushed tight against the ceramic lip. Next lay your right forearm over the dome and grab the top of the hinge. Pull up on the hinge with your hand while pressing down on the dome with your forearm. Tighten the band using your left hand and a ratchet.[p]This all assumes your band is not tight against the ceramic lip ALL the way around. If it is than none of this will do any good.
